Well happily ive got my cfmoto engined loncin utv running really well . Few more jobs but one of these is the gear lever. It seems to be reversed.
Im wondering if this engine should be fitted the other way round?
The cylinder head is at the rear of rear of the vehicle but a handbook i have for a cfmoto 500 utv 3 shows it with cylinder head at the front.
The picture on the gear stick seems to  be in the same order with the gear box but a cantilever on the side of the gear lever hangs down thus reversing the
action. Wonder if I can rotate the cantilever so it points upwards which would correct the situation. If i did reverse the engine wioud gives issues with the muffler and also would the drive shaft distance between diff and the  uj ,s on the engine still be the same? Any help appreciated. Which way round is the engine on your 500 utv?

Is this that Loncin motorcycle that uses a CFM engine? Engines can only go in one way.

... but this is not a CFMoto Cforce machine.

This image appears to show the cylinder head facing the rear of the vehicle, so if all things are equal, the shift should work.

Did you put in the same type/model engine that was originally in the machine?

Two family members suggested we buy this project about six years ago.
The workshop who owned it had spent that much time and couldn't make it pay. Single cylinder engine. How difficult could it be? These mechanics who build buggies said when they had it that a con rod had gone thro the side so put in a cfmoto 188. Gave me all the original bits which had a loncin belt cover but the engine was cf 188.
The vehicle had been at the jcb works. Guess they were bench marking or copying before developing their own.
There were no ignition keys barrels etc. Took me  a while to work out the starting elecs. Obtained a user manual for loncin lx 500 utv inc wiring diag. Perfect wiring  colour matches.
Any way got it running this week . Quiet and smooth but still have to attach the drive shafts.  Only wondered if it was the wrong way round because neutral light is incorrect. Bat on phone low so will come back on later. Thanks. Doug

So doug its likely that this loncin is correct having the vylinder head at the rear. When i sit in the drivers seat and put the gear lever to a position where the neutral light comes on the output shaft freely rotates. The lever on the engine is in the second position from the rear end suggesting the next and last position is reverse. Similarly moving the metal lever forward brings on the high light. Unfortunstely the labeling on the gear knob does not match. Hi and low are forwsrd and neutral and reverse are rear but because their is a cranked lever dropping down from the gear knob it reverses the direction of operation of the control rod.  So . Would we expect neutral and reverse at  the gear housing lever to be pointing toward the cylinder head on all cf 188s ?

If the gear positions on the gear box are correct then i can solve the problem by reversing the crank on the gear knob linkage to point upward rather down.

It's difficult to form a mental picture of what you describe, but it sounds like you have it under control.

Well doug think the engine is the right way round. I was just not moving the lever far enough.  Moves the right way and checked  the outputs rotating right when I rev upYou have raised something else though. You mentioned park?
Haven't got a park position marked on the gear knob ? Thought the park light was associated with the park brake. You suggesting there is a park position on the gear box lever on the cff 500? If so where would it be?
My smooth running statement was incorrect. It intermittently gets advanced by 20 odd degrees and runs crappie. Won't start or if it does really lumpy. Think I'm going to remove the fly wheel and check the keyway. If the fly wheel was slipping slightly on rotation that would explain the advance position. Not sure why it would advance to the same position each time and not go further forward. Got to illuminate it.

I would expect the 500 to have PRNHL, in that order. If you disconnect the shift linkage, you should be able to select all five positions.

I have no knowledge about the gear shifter on your rig.

Hi Doug back again. My highly advanced ignition and bad running issuses i believe ive resolved. I was reading issues on a rhino forum. Saw there that loads of people raised issues about the reverse switch. People who had the reverse light on had poor performance in forward and reverse including spits and pops, alternate sparks surpressed and general poor running and vibration . All down to the reverse light being on. Mine was on. A faulty reverse switch. I thought the reverse switch would apply an earth when in reverse but its the other way round. Earth is there all the time until in reverse. I did notice that if the green wire was grounded the light went out but assumed this was a fluke and just masking a problem. I also thought the reverse earth would just give a signaling issue and thetefore didnt pursue it.  I did suspect on one occasion that i couldnt start it until the rev wire was earthed. More than this the earth brings on a limiting affect in the cdi
Reducing rev revs and forward revs differently. I grounded the wire permanently to test it and the engine started straight away. More important timing light observations were perfect even when revving up. Im beginning to wonder if this has been my problem all along. Remember suspecting at one point that the engine was firing on the wrong top dead centre. Of course the ignition system is the wasted spark system and should have sparked on every tdc. So i now know what led me to this stupid conclusion. My real problem for non starting was the seized compression rings which i eventually found. Now I have  grounded the earth perm pending a new switch and low and behold it started perfectly and runs really well.
Cant believe it. Of course my cdi is a 3 plug the same as a rhino so not sure if other cfmoto owners would get the same symptoms?
Back to the gears. Got them nicely adjusted but not ran the machine yet in gear. Having reread your last reply
Im thinking that Loncin and Rhino dont have a park position on the gear stick lever but from what you have said my cfmoto 188 will have that position. So i may have to change the gear stick for a five position one.
Do cfmotos have the same rev lead problem i have mentioned? Not seen it on the forum?

Great news Peter! You've done well to connect the dots from varying sources of information.

I have not heard of the rev limiter being engaged due to a faulty switch or wiring on the CFMotos, but that doesn't mean it could not happen, so your posts may help someone else one day. There is a limiter override switch on the Motos.

Did you try disconnecting the gearshift linkage and test the shift lever on the engine by hand to see if it has more travel than the shifter provides, or count how many positions there are?
