Timing chain tensioner
« on: December 10, 2017, 07:18:13 PM »
Does any know if the timing chain tensioner is adjustable looks like it is it has a bolt on the side of the cylinder and Alfa sports parts diagram shows a spring and bolt.  I only ask cause this morning it was 16° out and I started it and herd some chatter like lose chain it went away 30 seconds later but I did not like the sound of it.

I think the tensioners are automatic but the book does talk about pre-setting it before installing the spring so...maybe it's worth a look.

I just read the service manual on it and it is adjustable you have to take the valve cover off and get the cylinder to tdc and then remove the tensioner and reinstall it till there is no more movement in chain plus 1/8 turn so I'll be messing with that sometime this week........ Always something to tinker with.  Finish one project on to the next lol

just had my tensioner out due to replacing the timing chain.   It is automatic, to a point.  it will get tighter, but not looser.   It is spring loaded.   there are 3 parts to the tensioner.  The body, the ram, the spring bolt.   I cleaned mine with brakeclean and then put some motor oil on the threads and spring.  You install it in 2 parts.  The ram gets screwed into the body, then it is installed in the head.  Once it is installed, the spring bolt gets installed and torqued.  This spring will then force the ram out to the chain guide to apply pressure.

Flipper, is there any preload...or rather.. pre-twisting of the spring that is required?
