I started out with wire cable, but later switched to synthetic rope.  It was the synthetic rope from Harbor Freight.  I used it a lot and I didn't change out my roller fairlead.  I used it so much plowing snow as well as other tasks that I finally broke it.  I tied it together and kept working, but I got a new synthetic rope when I got a chance.  I will also be getting a non roller hause.  I will not go back to wire rope.

I've read that switching from wire to synthetic rope loses alot of rope footage. I just upgraded my Zforce 800 Trail to a 5,500lb synthetic rope winch, as I anticipate my machine & gear trailer will be 2,200 - 2,500lbs.

As for Hawse vs. roller fairlead, this video has great info:

Used the oem one 6-8 times already and never let me down.  I pulled a wrangler out of a high center situation with it also.
