Starter not engaging
« on: December 30, 2017, 02:49:37 PM »
Cforce 500HO 2016’ low miles. Tried to start this AM  10°F . After 3 failed attempts of cranking for 1 second each, all of sudden starter is not engaging mechanically to crank engine. Starter will spin but it’s not meshing at all. I’ve noticed with cold starts it made a clank noise after each attempt at cranking. Any info regarding how starter engages would be helpful. Everything else is good, battery, voltage, solenoid etc... definitely mechanical. Is something sticking/broke. ATV has under 250 miles and is only 1.5 years off showroom floor and not beat on at all. ??Help Please

Only one way to know. Have to pull it down. It's probably either a lost tooth on the drive gear or a failed one-way bearing.

I would hazard a guess and say you have a frozen starter solenoid.
Moisture must of got in there somehow and the cold temp is making it stick.
Get some heat on it like a hair dryer for a few minutes to un-thaw and give it a try.

I don’t believe it’s the solenoid because when start button is pushed the starter spins Normally  but the gear on the starter shaft is not meshing with the drive gear and lean king engine.  If it was a bad solenoid it would either click,  not   Send enough juice to the starter ,  be stuck in the on position   Continuously cranking the engine while the engine was started .

Just talking in general as I haven't had to tear into this one. I have had problems with the bendix, starter will just spin and the gear won't pop out to engage the flywheel. Some have decided to work after giving it a love tap. Not sure if this one has the one way bearing on a gear. Starter teeth stay in contact with it and once the engine gets going it free wheels.

This starter doesn't have a bendix. It's a fixed gear on the starter that engages with another gear on the crankshaft somewhere. So it should have a one way bearing/clutch on the crankshaft. That bearing/clutch is most likely the problem. Unfortunately you'll need to open it up to replace it.
