Spin on oil filter modification.
« on: September 12, 2022, 06:07:07 PM »
While i was a lurker on the site i came across a thread about a spin on oil filter modification that got mt attention. What i got from the posts about it is that this part is for a can am but will
fit a cfm 800 trail.It's sold thru Mr.Rpm.
If i understand right the O ring that is on the current oil filter cover can be used?
What i'm not understanding is the inner seal thats talked about.I haven't changed my oil yet in my 800 so maybe thats why?Can someone please exsplain about this inner seal ,maybe post some pictures where it goes or something?
I want to buy the adapter and put it on during my first oil change.
The adapter sounds so much easier than the stock filter set up.
Thanks guys.........Bob  Oh my cfm is a 2018 800 trail

You will replace the outer cover with the adapter and yes, the OE O-ring will still work. The adapter has a part that slides over the inner part that the OE filter slides over. The OE filter has a rubber grommet in the end that seals it. You will take that grommet off the old filter and install it on the tube-thing of the adapter so it can seal to that same piece. Get the one for the Rotax 800...and for now get one of their filters. You can cross-ref it with others later.

NMK.Thank you for the information. When i get the adapter which will be in a few weeks i
will check it out and if i have any more questions i'll get back to you.
While reading the thread on this i noticed that someone said the rubber off a wix brand stock filter was the better? I'm wanting to do this the correct way and not have any problems in the future.
We have an ACE hardware here in Weiser,Idaho that i might be able to match the rubber gromet to.I guess once i get the part and look at it closely i'll understand more of what your saying........Thanx

The problem is...the holes they put in the bottoms of the filters are different sizes and the posts they slip over are also different sizes. No one really make a filter specifically for a CFM engine other then CFM. People use brands for the 800 Rotax engine..which was what was copied and "adjusted" by CFM. But the actual post side is slightly different as well as the filters. To be correct, when installed, the rubber grommet must not only seal to the post, but expand enough to seal to the bottom of the filter. If it doesn't, there is a chance for a leak or "bypassing". And it just takes a .002 piece of trash to scare a rod bearing. I tested Highflo, CFM and K&N. The only one that fit correctly on the post was the CFM. The others had play in the grommet grove. This is why I will use only a CFM oil filter. You would be wise to test several and make sure it seals tight. I'm sure one will be just fine...maybe all.

These were some of the numbers I came up with at the time. The can am numbers came from the Highflow and the K&N. At the time, no one listed a filter for the CFMs other then CFM.

Just got off the phone with Mr.Rpm and asked some questions. The person i spoke with said that he has heard of guys with cfmotos useing the spin on oil filter adapter.
But he couldn't confirm it nor say anything about how they fit .
I guess the price has gone up $105.00 with filter plus shipping.Don't know if thats a decent price or not.
But it's not like other companys have the adapter.

They do work like I say. People are using them. Just make sure whatever inner rubber you use..seals correctly.

I'm going to go ahead and order the adapter.I have gone back into the forums and noticed a few things on this subject and need to make sure i order the correct stuff or whats needed.
Do i need to order a canister type filter for the can am 800 for the rubber piece and use it?
Or can i use the one of my current filter?
Do i need to order the bigger O ring for the adapter.
I could just order the oil change kit of of e bay and get every thing ill need
i just won't use the canister filter.I want to do this right so i don't have
any problems.

The O-ring that is on your current cover will be fine or if one comes with it. I can't tell you which filter rubber will fit better but..the used one on the current can be one...and one off of any filter that is stated for the Rotax 800 will all be the same. So get a cheap one like Highflo or puralator. In reality either may be just fine as no one had reported any issues with either....that they are aware of. I was all gun-ho on this a few years ago but sense my riding and boiled-down to less then 200 miles per year..(less then 75 this year), and I use one of the most expensive synthetic oils out there, I only change my oil every three years or so now. And when I do, it's still so clear even at around 800 miles it's still hard to see on the stick and comes out almost clear as it was when it went in. Good enough to use in my oil cans. If I had to do it every few months I would be putting on the spin-on filter for sure.

I'm getting ready to order the spin on oil filter adapter from mr.RPM for my 2018 800 trail.
I figured while i was at it i would order a oil filter for a Rotax 800 for the rubber piece and
a rubber for the cover so i can start with all new rubber seals.
Since some have done this mod ,is there anything else i might need?

Just the spin-on filter itself. Just one thing-some have said the newer 800s have different oil lines to the oil cooler and that they heeded some...adjustment..to allow for the filter. Didn't sound like a big deal.

The spin on oil filter adapter from MR,Rpm came today.I'm a very happy camper.
I 'm going to change the oil and install it later this evening.
As far as what rubber seals to use it came with instructions so no worry there.
I figure that with the spin on filter it's going to take extra oil.
I know alot of you have added this to your machines. How much extra oil am i going to add?How many quarts total?
Thanks to all that have helped me with this project.Your the best.

It's only what the oil filter holds...about a cup or so.

I went back to the old forums when you were starting out doing this oil adapter venture.Lots of good information posted.
I did see a part to where you say Do NOT use a cf moto filter rubber off the canister cause it's a bit sloppy. You suggest getting the can am filter and useing the rubber off of it cause it fits snugger.
When i orderd the oil for the machine i ended up getting a oil change kit.
It came with crush washer, the cap big O ring and a canister oil filter.
Any reason i shouldn't use those rubber pieces?
I feel like i'm being a pain in the --- asking all these questions.I just don't want to not do this right and mess the motor up.

I never put one on the actual adapter, only compared the rubber sizes to the post on the machine and the canister bottom. I assume as this was made for the Rotax 800 and they tell you to use the rubber off it's oil canister, and that the CFM and the Rotax filter canister holes and rubbers were slightly different in size, that it would be better to use what they say. But..try it. Put the ribber off the CFM filter on it, oil it a little, and slide in onto the post. if it feels like it will seal fine and its not too tight, use it. If not..snag a Rotax filter.

Changed the oil and put the spin on oil filter adapter from RPM yesterday.
Followed all the instructions and information i've gotton off the forum and it all went good.
Had no problems with anything being in the way of the filter.
I put in the 3 quarts an started the engine let it run for about 5 minutes to let it cycle thru. When i checked it the dip stick said full.I did it again and same thing.I guess the spin on filter doesen't hold that much oil.
It just seems weird.
The filter is the Baldwin B 1406 that came  with the adapter.
What other filters can i use or will interchange.
