Shifter cable adjustment.
« on: December 14, 2021, 07:14:24 AM »
Does anyone have the actual service manual adjustment procedures for a zforce? My new 800ex will go into every gear fine but pops out of Low sometimes and will make a ratchet sound on deceleration in low. From my research (mainly on the RZR forums) it shifter needs to be adjusted to put more pressure on the cable in low. I can physically hold it in low and it will stay.

Also, I have to depress the lock button on the shifter to get it out of park, but it moves freely through all other gears without using the button. Is this the way it’s supposed to work?

It's a solid rod on the ZForce and easy to adjust however do know that on some, the detents on the shifter handle and the transmission do not line up perfectly. Mine was one. (Thought they fixed this by 2018 but you never know). And mine did the same thing yours is doing. Even after setting the alignment from the N position it would be out of sync by L or P. I had to "Adjust" the shifter detent notches to be wider on P & L so it would work. I used a dremmel. You can eliminate the shifter detent lock by loosening the handle set underneath and screwing the handle down. That pushed the locker away from the detents but..is very dangerous for the transmission as a bump of the shifter handle will knock it into another position. Good to test an alignment problem...bad to leave it that way.  First try to adjust the rod so that when you move the shifter into any position and release the button, that the shifter DOES NOT MOVE as the shifter lock sets in place. Watch it closely. If it moves, it's putting pressure on the transmission's detent..which is just a ball and spring on the drum and as the engine is rubber-mounted and will move, it will pop out of gear. Not a great design. Needs to be more movement available in the shifter lock notches for all that engine movement. And no is the answer to your second post. As I recall supposed to lock in all positions...I think.

I doubt checked it today. The button locks it in park and neutral but not in the other gears.

Interesting info I learned today… I was at lunch with coworkers talking about this shifting issue and they seem to think is the normal thing for these vehicles. I had a zforce 800 trail rider, a Tyrex LE 4 seater and a Talon 1000X rider. They all said they have trouble getting it into Low at times. The Kawi owner said his grinds regularly in low if it doesn’t go all the way in. The Honda guy said his is a PAinIn the Ass to find Low. Said he just leaves it in high.

Mine doesn’t either…now.
I pulled it all apart tonight and adjusted it. I had to turn it out(lengthened it) by about three turns. I tightened it out all the way but that made high gear want to barely stay in gauged.  I backed it off to just take the slack out of the linkage. I rode it around for about 20-30 minutes in low and shifted back to reverse and park a bunch. So far so good.
