A local dealer has a 2017 w/ 800 miles on it.  Said it's a REPO and they're asking $6895 for it. That seems like a decent price - what should I be on the look out for in regards to wear and tear issues?

$6,900 seems a little high for a two-year-old CFM ATV. New 800XCs are only $8,499. KBB has the 2017 CF800s at $6,435 so..$6,200 or so would be fair...unless- check that it has the upgraded air filter. If not, offer 4,500 or walk away because if it's had the OE paper filter in it for 800 miles, the chances it is at the end of the top-end's life expectancy is high.

Does the OE Air Filter actually damage the machine?  Does damage lead to visual or audible cues as to something wrong?

Not all of them but most of the OE paper filters allow 30+ micron sized particles by which would wear out any engine very quickly. Many with these filters in dusty areas are getting less then a thousand miles out of their engines. This is why our first and biggest recommendation to all new CFMoto owners is to not drive it an inch without upgrading that filter to the Unifilter...not even a TwinAir as it too had proven to let particles by.

Thanks, I think I will pass on it then, just called and they verified everything is stock with 800 miles on it.  The town I live in is very sandy - Is the potential engine wear anything you could see without tearing it apart?  Like checking the filter for heavy amounts of fine dirt/dust?

Yeah, you can check the filter and take a swab of the intake track after the filter...and of course do a compression test. It might be fine..
