Here's a modified version I just did...a bit quicker and I put the CFM 800 clearances in it:

I put the CFM 800 clearances in the one I modified

I have to say that the CFM engines are not easy to get to the crank shaft and they don't mark the cam sprocket the same way so I cheat just a little. Here's what I do: Pull both spark plugs so you can use the starter to bump the engine over. Pick a cylinder and pull the valve cover. With an understanding of how a 4-stroke engine works, bump the starter until you see the intake valves start to go down. This is the start of the intake stroke and as such it's two strokes away from the exhaust so the cam ramps and lobes for the exhaust are well away from the rockers. Bump it until the rockers are well down. This assures you that you are well away from the exhaust stroke and the overlap that happened at TDC on the exhaust stroke. Now set the exhaust valves. When done bump the starter until you see the exhaust valves JUST start to go down...I mean just barely a quiver. This is the start of the exhaust stroke and near the end of this stroke starts the intake stroke. Not far away..but far enough to be able to set the intake valves.

Practice bumping the starter and watching first. These spin pretty fast with the starters. DO not start them between settings.

Of course if you want to take the air box cover off and the fan & housing off and still take out the plugs, you can get to the crank to rotate it. If you do, you can just watch the intake valves open then close (come back up). Once they reach the top give the crank 1/2 turn. That will be close enough to TDC on the compression stroke to set all the valves.

Good info, the clearances seem to have quite a large range or am i reading the chart wrong?

Well I started the tear down of the back half of the machine last night. After more than a hour I got to this point and stopped for the night. I will try to set the valves tonight. Did mention how I hate push pins......lol

Yeah,

Its a little more than a 10-15 min job. I might have been able to get under all that, but this also gives me a chance to tighten things I could not reach. Plus I am getting real good at tearing this machine apart........ :o

I must have dropped a dozen F bombs when I had to do mine. Spry the back of the fan screws with some oil. The inserts like to tear out of the plastic.

I wonder...can you just turn it over with the fan installed? I never tried..

It's not a big deal to pull the fan so you can get to the crank, but the brass inserts get crusty. Spray them from the back side and just go easy on the screws. There isn't a good way to see back there just using the starter.

So setting the valves has not been too bad of a problem, except I've noticed that the intake valves were little tight are probably ten thousands and at the exhaust valves were little tight probably by about 10,000 also I did not pull that off the fan.I was able to use a wrench on the crank and turn it without a whole lot of difficulty got it to top dead center on the compression stroke with the spark plug pulled and make sure the line in the window on the crank or flywheel was where it should be buy the service manual. I think I've got it right I set the valves right in the middle of the high and low range. Does that sound about right to you guys.

I go to the middle most of the time unless it's something close like. 003 or less. than I go to the high side to buy me more time between adjustments. Turn it over a few times then dubble check it's right.
