When installing say a lightbar , you have a +  and - . Can you just run that to the battery with a switch attached to turn off and of course a fuse on the + ?
Reason I ask is, what does a relay do ?

You can run it straight to the battery with a fuse on the positive side.. but know that if you leave the light on, or someone flips it on while away...like someone's kid, the battery will be drained. I did that with a reverse light on my Brute once. The point of the relay is that the coil side is triggered by...in this case..power from a keyed source that only has power when the key is ON. Key not on...no power to the coil and no connection to the battery. Safe. Still want that fuse and you can ground it to the frame anywhere.

What NMK said.
i installed some 'ditch lights' on mine running to the battery post with a positive side fuse and an illuminated mini rocker on my 800XC. When I get more familiar with the wiring loom I will probably try to put that on the ignition side of the wiring.

I didnt put huge lights on mind, but ive seen no issue with the charging system supporting them at all.
