Proper oil checking procedure
« on: October 23, 2022, 02:26:06 PM »
I’ve always used less oil in my machines than the owner’s manual stated to keep it on the full mark. For example, my 2021 CForce 500 lists a fill capacity of 2.96 quarts with a filter change. If I fill to that and check it a day later sitting in the garage, it’s half an inch above the full line. So I’ve started using 2.75 as my fill capacity. When cold the engine reads right on the full mark. But recently I’ve noticed that the manual says to start the machine and let it idle for around 30 seconds. Shut it off and let the oil settle for “sometime” and check level. Well if doing it by this method the oil is in the middle of the stick and when you add to the full mark it’s around 2.96 quarts total. So I guess my question is what is the proper way to check level? My 800 EX says the same procedure and use 3.59 quarts but that puts it halfway up the stick over the full mark. I use a whole 3 quarts on the 800 and it’s perfect whether cold or idled for 30 seconds. I’m confused and want to know what everyone is doing.

As long as it is in the range...and you do it without screwing the dip stick in, it's OK. I give mine whatever it takes to be on the full mark as soon as I shut it off because I don't care where it is not running, I just want it as close to the full line without going over (maybe a hair) while running as possible.

To make things worse, I called multiple Cfmoto dealers nationwide today to poll them on what amount of oil they put in at a service. I got all sorts of answers. Everything from start at 2.5, start it and then top off until full, check it as soon as you cut it off and then one told me to check it after it sits overnight. One dealer (very large well known dealer) told me to buy the gallon jug for the 800 and that it takes most of not all of that. I’m more confused now that I asked. So far I’ve been using 3qts for the 800ex and 2.75 for the 400 and 500 Cforce machines. It’s slightly overfilled when cold and sat a while and just under the full line when run and then checked. Hope a 1/4 qt either way doesn’t hurt anything.
