Maybe a crazy question but why doesn't anyone tow their side by side with a tow bar to the trailhead? Would this be hard on the running gear/tires if it was put in neutral? I mean if it were only a few km.

I suppose you could for very short distances and low speeds but it is hard on the drivetrain, transmission as I am sure there are a few bearings that only get oil from the oil pump.. and the tires are not meant for highway use. Also here..they are not allowed to be on pavement...running or not.
