Particle Separator 2023 thoughts?
« on: April 22, 2023, 09:05:07 PM »
Well, I've read some posts from previous years on particle separator.  I'm starting to consider it this year as servicing my uni filter is becoming ever more annoying.  What are your thoughts in 2023?  (zforce 500).  I've already blocked off the air intake inside the cab so that air doesn't come from engine bay/rear wheel area.  Thanks

Still considering one. Although there are others out there I still want the S&B for the YXZ 1000 as it will supply more then enough air for both my engine and CVT. My complete system was done in preparation for one to be mounted on top...but in the interim I bought the Donaldson TopSpin Prefilter/Particle Separator and it does take out 60+ percent of the dust and dirt which enables me to go sometimes several week long trips in dusty conditions without cleaning filters where before I had to stop on most every 5-hour ride at least once to clear my CVT filter and clean my first engine Unifilter every trip. So.I just haven't been able to justify the 400+dollar cost of the S&B...yet..:)

Is your air filter still in the oem box?  I wonder if the cfmoto kwt filter would be ok for my 500?  I can ride my jeep on the same trails, hit the carwash and be done with it, whereas I feel the sxs is like servicing a black hawk helicopter after each outing.  Anything I can do to keep the maintenance down is a big win for me.  Once you factor in the cost of the cleaner and oil, and your time, it'd pay for itself after a season or two.

I have an oversized Unifilter in the OE box and a regular sized Unifilter in the can/in-line filter. The CVT filter is the can's OE dry type so I can clean it on the trail easy. On the engine side, I only have to clean the one in the air box once a year and that's because I want to keep the treatment fresh..not that anything really gets by the first one. Not sure about the filter but IMO, it it comes from CFM..I won't use it..but I will use their oil filter. I have also tried lots of different places for air intake(s) in the rear and all locations were excessively in the "dust cloud" except right over the top of the roof in that air stream. Some day maybe I'll have something that looks like this:

What would you recommend for myself on the 500?  Do you have a link to a build thread of yours?  And if there's anything you'd do differently if you were to do it again today?  I think I'm ready to build something out, servicing the filter after every dusty ride is not that fun.

Yeah there's some how-tos in the how to section. After it's all said and done, there are people with front and rear windshields that did as I did and kept the Uni in the airbox but extended the intake up to the roof area inside the cab and put another Uni on it that have had really good results. There are others that were able to run a 2.5" flex duct to the front and put a small box and filter up there with good results as well. Kinda far to go though. I think If I were to do it all over again I would find an automotive air box that I could mount high inside and pipe both to it... one that I could install one or even two unifilters in and have separate booster fans when needed. That's all bit much but having a Uni easy to get to high inside has worked pretty well for a lot of people. Of course keep the one in the airbox as a second layer of protection. And with a 500 you can use just 2" pipe. I still recommend using aluminum turbo or inter-cooler pipe and silicone fittings as they are a true ID measurement.

I wonder if it would work to plum this dust deputy inline to the air filter?  Kind of a silly thought, but it's just sitting in my garage....
