Oil Recommondations
« on: January 02, 2022, 01:45:37 PM »
I know on the Harley-Davidson forum I belong to that "Oil" questions are a hot topic and one of the most over asked questions on the forum.  With that being said, I researched the forum best I could and still have questions about oil.

I just purchased a 2021 CFMOTO CForce 400.  I live in Central Minnesota and as an example, this morning it was 22 degrees BELOW zero.  The dealer is prepping my ATV (I am adding a winch and snow plow) and they are also going to swap out the 15W-40 that came stock in the engine with 10W-40.  I will be picking my ATV up later this week.

1.  Is 5W-40 the best viscosity choice for oil for Minnesota weather?  The Owner's Manual suggests 5W-40 unless the environment is hot.  It shows 5W-40 is good for downwards of 25 degrees below zero to over 100 degrees above zero.

2.  I would like to eventually run synthetic oil.  The dealer said synthetic does not work as well with the clutch, but I've run synthetics in other vehicles (e.g. Honda motorcycle) and did not have any issues.

3.  If synthetic is fine, how many hours/miles before it's safe to switch over?  I follow break-in procedures to the T and am very careful how I put those first few hundred miles on.

4.  It looks like there is an oil sump filter (bottom of engine where the drain bolt is) along with a filter cartridge on the side of the engine.  I didn't realize they had a sump filter.  Is that something that just gets cleaned or is it replaced?

Thank You in advance for any information you have for me.  I also apologize if this topic has been beaten to death.  If I were on the Harley-Davidson site, I would have been ostracized from the forum by now.

5W40 is fine but if you store it in an area that will get -20 or more, then 0W40 would be better. Many are using 0W40 year-round now with no problems. Your 400 does not have a wet clutch, only the CVT so your dealer is wrong on that account. He is also wrong on synthetics not working well with clutches anyway...as long as they have the JASO MA2 rating, it is fine. You will want that rating on any oil anyway as it also applies to any shared sump machine...ie engine and transmission share the same oil. The sump filter gets cleaned once in a while only. Yours is easy..mine isn't and has never been done. Switch to synthetic after the second oil change..or after at least 10-12 hours of operation. And do your engine a favor and give it one change before the scheduled first change. Over 90% of the break-in happens within the first hour so getting that first mass of trash out asap never hurts. After that stick with the schedule unless it's been used very heavily.

Great Information - Thank You!

I have always used Amsoil in my Harley-Davidson motorcycles.  I see that Amsoil has a 0W-40 that I think will be perfect for me.  Any filter recommendations or just run O.E.M.?  I always replace the crush washers on vehicles equipped.  I ordered the factory service manual as well (first advice I give to new riders so I'm taking my own advice).  I love doing my own work whenever possible.  I have the battery tender sitting in the garage and ready to go.

Also, I like to run 91 Octane non-oxygenated/recreational fuel in all of my power equipment.  Is that fine for the CFMOTO machines as well?

Does anyone have the oil filter name/number for a 2021 CForce 600 Tour?  Are there alternative after-market oil filters out there that are not at dealer?

Curious.

Takes the same cartridge as the rest that use cartridges so any of the 152s from Highflow, K&N will work as well as there is a WIX & NAPA # those cross with. Know that there is some slight differences between all these and the CFM OE filter that may...under certain condition cause a problem, in that the are some side differences between the nipple, rubber grommet and the hole size on the filter that causes the grommet not to seal tightly to all surfaces and could cause a little bypassing if the filter ever becomes restrictive.     No one has run into that yet though as far as they know of...

I found an oil filter cartridge that works ( according to Mainstreetcycle).
HiFlo Filtro HF 152 for 2020-21 CForce 600, 600 Tour

Local dealer has a "filter" for $14.99.  They did not say if it was OEM or anyone else.  They were sort of bothered by someone asking questions about it, pissy IMO.

I also found Active Power Sports internet site.  High Flow Premium HF 152
It comes in a black and green box, yellow lettering.

activepowersports.com    $5.62 ea,  + very reasonable shipping cost $5.87 ship/for 3, no tax.

I have not found a local oil (5,10,15w 40 or 50) yet that is JASO MA2.  Maxima brand  is in videos, don't know of any other brand yet.  Maybe someone has specific brands out there?

If you are looking for a high quality oil that meets JASO MA2 specs, IMHO , Rotella is one of the best bangs for the buck.  Look no further than your local Walmart for rock bottom prices on it.  Amazon and Advance Auto have it also.

This is what I used last time. Pretty good deal on a well known filter with a good track record. OEM is $13 plus and I have three machines so it does add up.

I also use this oil in my 4 wheelers. I lucked out because I get it by the gallon on Amazon. I figured out that my Cfmoto ATV’s take 2.75 quarts to fill up. My John Deere Gator takes 1.25 quarts. One gallon for $27.80 does both of those machines. Add in the filter and I’m doing both for under $20 each.

I am going to use Amsoil 0W-40 after I do the first oil change with conventional oil.  Our local Runnings and FleetFarm carry Amsoil for around $14 per quart.  My local CFMOTO Dealership agreed with the other advice I received on this post - that 0W-40 would be a perfect oil for our climate here in Minnesota.

Anyone running Motul ATV oil in their machines?  I saw a big display of it at FleetFarm the other day.  It meets the Jaso MA2 requirements.  I bought three liters of 10W-40 (Mineral based) to use for my first oil change and then I plan on switching to Amsoil 0W-40 for our Minnesota climate.

Motul is good oil. It's more widely used in the EU but we also have access to it here. No issues.

Whatever oil you do use add BG EPC to it will keep your oil from oxidizing and breaking down longer.   I don't run high octane fuel instead every oil change I also add BG 44k to full tank of fuel - cleans whole fuel system w out doing a fuel service and coats the system to keep fuel related deposits from forming which is what will cause the mechanical failures. Need to find a dealer around you the uses the product check auto dealerships if you can't find one near you and ask them for it.

In the past adding additives when not necessary is usually harmful to things like pumps and injectors over time. We appreciate your input however we also notice every post of yours promotes the use of this or some other product which.. might be considered directed promotion or spam. Let's steer away from that. Thank you.

Rotella T6, the one that says it's for diesel engines?

Also, would it work for both cforce 400 and 1000?
