No Steering
« on: August 15, 2021, 12:17:32 PM »
Hey Group, need some help here. I have a 2018 Zforce1000 with about 1,400 miles on it,  2.5" lift and 30" tires and we ride pretty hard on a lot of rocky terrain. On our last ride I noticed the steering getting a little notchy and seemed off. Then I started having a delayed steering response and finally no steering at all - steering wheel spins but the wheels don't turn. I figured a blew out the rack with the bigger tires but when I removed it today and turned the shaft on the rack it works fine. Going to check the u joints and shafts next but wanted to see if anyone has any other ideas. Thanks!

Welcome. Yes, check the u-joints starting at the top. Many of the spline bolt clamps were left loose at the factory and that means slop on the splines which leads to stripping in time. It will probably be the one just below the P/S unit.

Yes I found all the u joints on the steering column were not completely tight. After first ride me wheel was completely upside down with wheels straight. luckily I caught it before it damaged my splines.

I checked the u-joints and all were tight, I locked a pair of vice grips on the two sets of u- joints and positioned against the frame and tried to turn the steering wheel and everything seemed solid, no slipping. So I am hoping it is the rack, already ordered one, just hope it gets here in time for our labor day trip.
