no acceleration on hills
« on: June 07, 2020, 11:16:35 AM »
I bought a 2020 zforce 800ex and took it to NH friday and saturday. It ran great friday and most of saturday, but on saturday I was going up a hill on the trail and the machine wouldn't accelerate. If I gave it throttle it did nothing. No increase in speed or rpm's. I put it in low and creeped up the hill. It should have gone up no problem in high. It runs perfect on even ground and had climbed many hills before this happened. Any idea why this happened?

Have you checked the basics like the air filter..and have you changed it to the unifilter? How's the coolant temperature? Has how the clutches work changed in any way? Has the valves been adjusted yet? Might take a look.

In short the top three reasons for this behavior is: Low air supply, low fuel supply or low compression. The next most often cause is a clutch problem. After that...well you don't want to know but in can be seizing brakes or failing engine.

This is a brand new machine and was the first ride. I put 100 miles on it on friday and another 100 miles on saturday. I went easy to break it in. Tomorrow I'll clean the machine and check the airfilter. I've got the uni filter, but it came in yesterday, so I ran the stock filter. The temperature was good the whole weekend.

Next time that happens, try turning off the machine, waiting a 30 seconds, and restarting.  If that clears the problem, then the dealer needs to know this.

Two hundred miles without cleaning the air filter?  What did you find?

The air filter was pretty nasty.

Keep running that stock filter and you can kiss that engine good by. Clean the intake track with a white cloth with some clear oil. You might be surprised what you see on that cloth...and that stuff isn't the problem. The problem comes from all the stuff that didn't get stuck to the walls...which is 99% of what that filter let through. Just a little FYI, people in dusty conditions using those stock filters are getting less then 1100 miles out of their engines on average. Some don't make 500 miles. Get a Unifilter on it before the next ride. And be sure to use a quality foam filter oil treatment...like Maxima FAB1.

That filter doesn't look too bad at all. That looks like the upgraded stock filter.  It certainly doesn't look like it would restrict intake and effect performance.

I assume you were riding where it wasn't dusty.

The picture makes it look better than it really is. I put the uni filter on today with prefilter.

We rode in upstate New Hampshire. There was dust, but I try to hang back as much as I can.

I agree...it certainly isn't dirty enough to be restrictive yet. And yeah...that's the infamous OE paper filter.

Just an update. I finally got a chance to ride again, this time on tug hill in upstate ny. The machine ran great with no issues. The only thing I did was upgrade to the UNI filter and an oil change.
