New Skid Plate ! ! !
« on: July 22, 2025, 11:06:29 PM »
My 2023 800xc is gaining quite a few miles. Picked it up late 2023 to go with the 2022
However . . .
I've ran several sticks through the floor boards several times.
Mind this is just cruising down the roads in the mountains.
Theres still active logging here and late winter early spring theres blow downs all over the place.
Couple weeks ago I ripped the HDPE factory rear section almost off.
Not sure what got it . . . but its running on Zip Ties at the moment.
Fortunately no carnage on oil lines or brake lines etc.

That I haven't done real damage to something critical on the actual trails - though I almost went over the other day - is at least part luck.

But after taking yet another chunk out of the floor board the other day I called it quits on the stock belly pan and ordered an Iron Baltic set.

It arrived to day and I don't have it on yet, but I got it primed and used herculiner on it.
Mind the finish is great, a nice sanded satin finish on the external surfaces, I Just chose to use a spray on bedliner and it will probably sound less like a beer can tumbling down a mountain.

The parts are really nice and solid.
I laid out the bits n pieces that were excellently packaged - except for the always immaculate care and handling such awkward packages receive in transit everything was there and counted out.

Flipped through the instruction book and wow, they did a fine job. I'm pretty skilled at assembly and installing a wide range of stuff but insturction on most things these days absolutely suck - these don't.
They have the parts in the diagrams labelled with what goes where and what bolt/washer/bracket goes where and it's not in Chinese!
The direction are very linear and clear to - I can't see it taking more than a couple of hours to do the complete swap.
It'll help because I know the 800XC chassis pretty good now doing regular maintenance.

It also got here quick - Ordered it the afternoon of the 17th and it arrived today.

I think it's going to make riding in the snow a bit different too- it wraps the undercarriage better and will probably pack less snow in it.

I'll try and remember to get some pics of the install along the way.

Next I think Im going to pick up the RJWC floorboards, The set is like $50 more than a stock CFmoto pair but the original ones have taken enough of a beating theyre starting to get weak.

Oh . . wait . . "oops" the floorboards are on the way now . . .  ;D
Found a stupid screaming deal I might actually be an idiot to walk away from . . . the RJWC set for the price of one of the CFM factory ones.

I replaced the factory ones on my 2019 800XC after destroying them. I went with the Ricochet set, I have had very good luck with them. I will say, however, if they are similar to the Iron Baltic set, they will trap a lot of mud and other gunk above them.

Just to toss something in that I did on my Brute Force after installing aluminum skid plating, I too found it trapped mud on top, squeaked from the plate contacting a frame that flexes and traps small rocks in against the tube and plates. I removed the plates, cut some 3/4" heater-hose in 1" pieces and split them, then slipped them around the frame close to every mounting point. These held the plate off the frame enough to stop the squeaking, allowed drainage and allowed me to use my pressure washer to blast out all that got on top of the skids after the rides. Cheap and easy fix. And..yes, it was a Ricochet set as well. Great product.

Yes on mud.
The factory plastic ones trapped a good bit . . but I routinely hose everything down.
Easier to work on that way.

Only real issue I had was the center bolt on the front section.
Damned welded nut broke free of it's weld on the frame so I have to go back in and re-weld it.

I definitely need a lift table though.

I have a 22 800XC and i put the IB skid plates on within the brake in period. Work great! Install was easy. Never damaged the floorboard, probably because of the skid plates.I Never had a problem with mud as i tend to try and avoid it and i pressure was mine off after every ride so im sure that helps a lot! That center bolt broke off on mine also. No penetration at all. More a small tack weld. I don't remember what i did for sure but i think i just left it off as there are enough attachment points missing 1 should not be a problem.

That's a good idea, I will have to consider doing that for mine. It really is not easy to get it all cleaned up after a muddy ride.

Im a fair enough welder I welded the insert back in place. I also added a couple spacers to decrease the clearance between the pan and insert so it doesn't bow the plate up.
I underestimated the amount of carnage the floorboards would take or I would have gotten real skid plates a lot sooner. Fortunately before I screwed up something important.
