Need pin-out for CDI CF188
« on: October 24, 2016, 12:59:27 PM »
I purchased a used 2007 UTV that has a CF188 motor (500).

The harness was damaged ... I purchased a CDI that was supposed to be for the motor (picture attached), but I cannot find anyone who will give me a pinout for this CDI. The CDI I have is a dual plug 15 pin ... one connector has 6 pins, the other connector 9 pins. I have a schematic, but that doesn't help because it doesn't give the pin number configuration. I know the following signals will be present on the CDI:

1. Ground
2. Power (12vdc)
3. Input from pulse coil
4. Output to ignition coil
5. Kill switch

Presumably, there will be pin outs to the neutral switch, brake lights, transmission, etc. ...

Do any of you have this CDI in your unit?
Can you at least send me a picture of the color code of your connector and the model so I can track the schematic down and figure out the pinouts?

It would be greatly appreciated. Between three of us, we've spent over 100 hours online attempting to find this information and it simply isn't out there. The CDI suppliers can't/won't even give us a pinout ... and my UTV is a large, worthless paperweight without it ...

Thanks in advance for any help with the CDI pinout configuration!

Steve

We have the service manual for the 500 under the cforce 500 category. There is the cf500 carb one and the efi  model too. Just download it.

Thank you so much for the quick response.
I already have that manual, but it does not contain pinouts for the CDI ... the schematic shows the outputs with the color coding, but that does not help me since neither have a harness nor a plug ... I can configure a harness if I knew the pinouts ... which I don't ... thanks again for the assistance, just need to have pinout diagram ...

Just so I have it straight. Your old cdi has different connectors than the one you bought. Once you have the pinouts you plan to splice in the new cdi.

No ... the vehicle was purchased with a damaged harness (resulting from a fire) ... there is no original CDI ... there is no original CDI plug ... both were destroyed ... I purchased the CDI pictured since it was advertised as a CF188 CDI and the pin number (dual plug 6 pin plus 9 pin) equaled the pinout on the schematics I have looked at for the vehicle.

Per the schematic, the CDI needs the ignition portion hooked up correctly (pulse, coil, power, etc.) ... and needs either the override pin or brake engaged to allow fire and starting ... the odometer output isn't needed nor the gear position sensors other than neutral, etc. ... if someone could give me a picture of their vehicle's plug with the wiring colors discernable, I'll fabricate a plug to get the vehicle started ... absent of knowing those pinouts, I'm lost ...

Thanks again for the quick reply ... just ... need ... pinouts for the CDI ... THANKS!

There is a handful of owners here. Hope they can get a picture for you. If no one does, maybe look through the 500 posts and pm some of them and plead your case. Most of the guys here are very helpful. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks ... I did a search of the site and there are very few posts regarding CDIs ... would you recommend going to the 500 section of the forum? If I could get an answer to the pin destinations on the picture below, I would be set ... :-)

I would give it a few days. If you don't get an answer, try pming some of the owners. They might be able to email you pictures directly.

I thought I would offer one more option. Why not buy the harness that matches the cdi you have. If you have the cfmoto part number for it than match it to the correct harness. This way you don't have to fab much and all the wire will be correct.

Harness is "No Longer Available" ... thanks for the thought, tho' ...
I'm just needing this vehicle to haul deer out of the woods ... don't need it fully functional with dash lights, etc. ... just need to fire the plug at the right time ... knowing where the necessary 6 wires go on the CDI will get me to where I need to be ... thanks again for your help / suggestions :-)
