Lianda Winch Maintenance

So, I broke an important rule.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  My Z8 is down for a little front end maintenance for which the winch had to be removed.  Since its about 5 degrees out I could not longer stand being stuck in the house like a prisoner of war.  I couldn't bear seeing the winch sitting on the workbench without being taken apart.  My curiosity got the better of me.

The first Warn winch on my Polaris failed because it got wet and rusted up inside.  The planetary gear sets were a mess.  Eventually the commutator corroded and the winch went in the garbage.  It didn't die from overuse, it died from not being used.  My goal was to give the Lianda winch a healthy dose of grease in the gearbox and on the seals. 

In the first picture you can see I have the drum out and the winch split into 2 sections.  On the left is the gearbox and the motor section is on the right.  In the second picture you can see the 2 planetary gearsets and a small amount for grease inside.  All the parts except the drum went into my parts washer.  I was very surprised to find O-rings sealing the gearbox and mechanical seals on the drum.  Its almost identical to the Warn winch on my Polaris except that the Lianda has O-rings.

Other then not enough grease it looks pretty clean inside compared to some I've seen. Just food for thought- a friend who lives in cold country found the grease was an issue in extreme cold. He cleaned it all up and went to a dry lube like some kind of graphite and said it now runs the same speed summer and winter...and seems to have more power...although that might be imagination. I was thinking if I ever needed to pull it apart I might try something like that. Or at least some good synthetic grease that the cold wouldn't make too stiff.

So..I see you use a synthetic rope...how much can you get on the spindle?

In these 2 pictures you can see the brush plate, motor housing, rotor, and commutator.  I was surprised to find a planetary gear set on the motor side of the winch.  I do not believe my Warn has that.  Even though my winch has been dunked in the slop a few times it was very clean inside.

I gave all the gear sets and the motor bearings a good slather of green grease.  I slopped up the O ringy dingys with grease too.  The next picture shows the reassembled winch.  There is 50ft of synthetic rope on that drum.  It's the thicker stuff and it barely fits as you can see in the first picture.  Overall I am pleased with the quality of this winch.

The last picture is a bonus pic of the current state on my 800.  The lower A-Arms are off in preparation for step washers to be welded into the frame.  I had to remove the winch to get the upper A-arms off.  It's getting all new bushings and bolts.   That's all for now.
