Is anyone burning avation fuel?
« on: December 17, 2019, 04:05:19 PM »
I know there has been some discussion about how hard it is for some to find leaded fuel.  If I recall correctly CFMoto recommends burning non-ethanol fuel, but many have been burning a higher octane 10% ethanol fuel with no problems.  So, I was wondering if anyone is burning avgas 100LL (100 octane, low lead) instead of the ethanol added fuel we get at the pumps?

My service manual states RQ93 or higher. That's in the Europe rating which is about a 5% higher number then how we do it in the US.

I can't get non-ethanol fuels here but it doesn't seem to be a problem. However as octane effects the rate of combustion and as combustion speed is effected by chamber pressures and tempatures, I tend to run the higher octanes in the hot summers and the lower in the cold winters...say 87 in winter and 91/93 in the summer. Always has worked out just fine for me....and all my machines...including my car.

I don't think the ethanol mixed fuel coauses any problems. I have run swedish 95 octane fuel (5% or 10% ethanol) for over 800h on my 520. I do have put in some injector cleaner once to clean the fuel system incase it had been some deposits of "dirt" from the fuel. This is something that has been a "problem" on some cars here as we have some environmentally "friendly" add on in the fuel hre that somethimes can create deposits in the injector systems.

doug - Here is where I was recalling from, I think.   My memory was a bit off, but still discussion concerning the use of non-ethanol fuel.   http://cfmoto-forum.com/general-discussion/fuel/   So sorry if I confused people.

NP:  It makes sense that there are folks who don't want to run with ethanol, but the machines themselves are just fine with it. Ethanol actually helps keep the fuel injection system clean, but it comes at a price of a bit less BTU density; not enough for most folks to care about.

I get a couple MPG better in my truck when I fill up with non-ethanol ...

Older carburetor systems can be negatively affected by ethanol.

Yah, I own a '65 Chevy stepside that know the ethanol problem well.

I’ve been burning 93 non ethanol in mine and it seems to love it. Took out the spark knock and runs strong.

I run premium octane and only a big brand if i'M stuck, but when in NH its a bit easier to find "NON" ethanol gas, as in claremont NH near trails, and wow its like night and day.. But it runs on either i think just fine in the NE.

Cfmoto ecu mapping is calibrated for 87 octane with 10% ethanol. Higher octane fuel is for higher compression engines to prevent pre detonation. Rec fuel or av fuel is a waste of money on our machines. I’ll run 87 and save the money for my next cfmoto!

Yeah you can actually loose power by running too high of an octane.

There is an emissions tag on your machine stating the required octane rating.

Forgot to mention the lead content is terrible for o2 sensors.

Lead?  Not in any modern fuel I'm aware of.

Think I read somewhere there is still a low-lead AV fuel out there. Still..death to any O2 sensor.
