While my z500 has been apart for repairs I've been contemplating a single stack intake and cvt snorkel using 3" piping with an inline filter, the spectre 9833 off Amazon,  integrated in the stack coming from the rear center of the bed and a 3" to double 2" Y coupler at the intake location between the seats. Then plumbing 2" to the engine and cvt intake off the Y coupler. This filter is rated at 750 cfm which i guess would be enough for both intakes to feed from and not starve one or the other of air. Id like the particle separator but not in the budget right now. Thanks for the input.

Well, clean it would be enough but let me tell you, the CVT pulls 8+ times the air through it as the engine intake does and in about 15 miles of dusty roads, that filter will be completely blocked...well..at least enough that both will be starved for air. I have separate 3" filters on each and I can't make a 30 mile ride with moderate dust without the CVT filter blocking-up enough that I have to use my booster fan to get back without burning up the belt. On the flip side, the engine air intake has a Uni in it and I can get several if not more decent rides before it needs cleaning. But the CVT filter needs clearing sometimes mid-every ride. So...my vote is..don't do it. I'm really looking forward to the day when my budget allows for a particle separator...which can feed both...and I can quit watching my CVT temp gauge all the time and just ride.

Think of it this way: at maximum RPM an 800 CC engine can only pump 800ccs per revolution. Let's say that's at 7000 RPM, that's 5,600,000.00 ccs per minute or 341,732 CIMs per minute and that works out to 197.76 CF per minute. Now how often do you run yours at 7K and consider a 500 is much less anyway. Now consider that weather its a 500, 800 or 1000, the primary fins are all about the same and move about the same amount of air through the housing and that the standard CVT air fan puts out on average 240CFM. So maybe 8 times per minute is a little exaggerated..but maybe not if you consider it over a longer time like.. an hour or several hours.     

Either way,I just never thought about how much air it moves. I kinda thought the system was a bit restricted. I guess not. The things you learn around here. 🤔

Not too restricted in stock config but it is some. Bad thing is not all the crap that gets pumped through leaves. Some stays and grinds away and parts...and builds-up. Adding a filter adds restriction too unless it's really large. Then as it gets blocked..wow the temps go from an average of 150 to 200+. Then it's belt-death so I really believe it's good to know what the temps are in there...either an air temp gauge or one of those Infrared systems. High-dollar though. That's why I just went with air temp. It does tell me when the filter is plugging up. Otherwise I wouldn't know until I lost a belt. I've been riding along and looked down to see the temp gauge over 210 a few times. My helper fan is only 130cfm but its enough to help pull more air through that dirty filter...usually long enough to get back to camp. One time this year it wasn't it was so dusty.

Yeah that's a lot of air, separate tubes it is!

How about this idea, Donaldson makes a pre air cleaner called topspin that is mainly for industrial applications but one review I read they used on a utv intake and it works great their filter stays clean. The one I'm looking at is rated at 90-200 cfm in order for the turbine to work properly and expels 80-85% of the dirt!  I wonder if i could mount one these at the top of a single 3" snorkel supplying both the intake and cvt? Input gentleman please...

No filter NMK, just cyclonic action that separates the dust from the air, but I'm still a bit lyre about plumbing the cvt and intake together. I may just do the two stacks anyway, test the one top spin on each to see how it works and if there's a significant reduction in the dust ingestion. Thanks!

A good explanation, but factually flawed. It takes two complete revolutions of the crankshaft to complete one combustion cycle. Due to this, your intake CFM would be half of what you stated.

Well, it does only pull-in or intake on one of those two so only half the revolutions per minute would be in-taking so you are correct. Does that then cut the engine intake numbers in half? Making the differential between the CVT and engine even that much more? Maybe. The underlying idea is a lot more air is being pulled through the CVT intake then the engine and if both are in the same dusty environment and being filtered, the one with the overall higher volume will plug faster. That...I have proven on my own set up....and at times is a real PITA.

Went with the Donaldson H002437 on the cvt intake and the Enginaire 2-20/150 on the engine intake. The follow up pictures are of the rough in stacks and the modified 2" abs routing of the intakes to the rear box.
