Improve cooling.
« on: January 04, 2016, 07:49:08 AM »
Hi guys, last night i went for a ride, in the town, low speeds, some traffic and more, i had 5 bars at the temperature gauge, 4 looked strange, never raise so high, or it was one bar passing the middle dont remember well, i had to take an avenue to cool it down. It was at night with 25 C ambient temperature. After 2 or 3 minutes riding at 60km/h, it was back in 3 bars.
Now, im thninking what happens if i go to a beach with 36 C and take some dunes, i will cook an egg on the hood.
Do you think its normal? Adding an extra radiator would help?, where?

I don't think this is normal at all. Better check the coolant level in the radiator and..that the fa is running. Some have had problems with the fan temp switch and others with the relay itself.

Coolant level is ok, triple check that, cold and hot.
Fun starts, but had the impression a few times that mismatch to engage. I mean, at the middle of the gauge, doesnt start, but it does on 3 bars, when  i forced cooling it running fast. i couldnt check this right, beacause a lack of time. But is posible beacause the cvt, that engine at 20 km/h runs at 3000 rpm, and at 40 runs at 3300 for example, cooling is improved by speed at similar rpms?
Besides that, never boiled, increases water level or something, and only hit 5 marks one time.

Fan should come on at the same time or about the same bars always and that's about 2 bars. Cooling is improved by air passing through the radiator, either by the fan or by speed of the vehicle passing through the air mass. RPMs only increase coolant flow through the radiator. If what's on it way back to the engine hasn't lost enough heat, then what comes to the radiator is hotter. Its a vicious cycle.  It does sound like your fan is not starting when it's supposed to. You may very will have the temp sensor problem others have. That sensor is high on the right side of the radiator as you sit in it. If you jumper it's two wires, the fan will run. Some have installed a switch to do this when needed or to test the system.

Thanks, i will check that. But can this termoswitch make erratic engages? or, its a on/off, works or not component.

It can especially if the contacts are bad or it's connector has an issue.

Check your radiator fins for blockage.  I mean really check it to make sure mud and dirt is not packed in the corners.  You should be able to see a light through it.  I've had this happen to me on my Polaris and my CFmoto.

Radiator is fine, never drive it on mud. Just a few dirt roads. Im sure its de thermoswitch or relay, like many of this forum.

I know this is an old post but if it cools more at higher speed its likely the radiator plugged with dirt. the motor generates more heat at higher rpm another problem I had was air in the cooling system there is a small bolt on the water pump housing that is for draining coolant you can bleed the air out of that on mine the coolant wasn't circulating because the pump was air locked I have never seen this happen with any other atv but it did happen just my 2 pennies

Just as a reminder on this subject, it was reported that some have had the coolant turn to jell in the system. This stops the flow of coolant not jelled.

I wonder what would cause the coolant to gel up?

Not sure but it was the factory installed stuff. They have sense switched to a new supplier sometime mid 2015. There is a thread on it here somewhere.

My coolant started to gel up.  I've never seen anything like it.  It was like there was actual pieces of green Jello around the filler neck.  It wasn't too bad so I drained it an refilled it.  No problems since.  My machine had about 400 miles on it when I noticed the problem.  I also a had a problem with my water pump weeping.  I'm not sure if was the coolant or the seals needed to wear in.  The leaking stopped and I have no further issues.

They had used a cheap coolant that turned to ooze. I had it happen in mine. Flush the system out real well with water and air, then put a good quality coolant in. I love the Maxima Coolanol.

Also, they had some issues with the thermoswitch. I got a bunch in stock just for that reason.

I'm a big fan of Engine Ice. Been running that in my King Quad for a few years now, and its just a phenomenal product. As an added plus, it is completely biodegradable, which I can bet you the OEM stuff is not:
