Just bought a new 450L and even with engine ON it shows 0 RPM. Any ideas what it can be? Where is the RPM sensor located?

Just bought a new 450L and even with engine ON it shows 0 RPM. Any ideas what it can be? Where is the RPM sensor located?

Most don't have a separate Tach sensor and use the data sent by the engine speed sensor...aka CPS. The ECU also uses that data for spark and injector timing so if it runs, it must be working. I would think either there is a break in connection to the pod...or the pod is defective. Either way as it is brand new, take it in.

Does that mean if the speed is displayed correctly, it should also display the rpm? Where is the sensor located?

Unit speed sensor is separate from engine speed sensor.

I don't own a 400/450 but it should be in the service manual. Generally the engine RPM/speed sensor has to come off the crankshaft and is aligned with the stator rotor...and that is usually opposite side of the engine from the primary clutch and the unit speed sensor is on the front(usually) drive shaft. This is from the UTVs.  You van go to the parts houses and look at diagrams.

Looking at the parts breakdown the CPS is on top next to where the stator wires come out of that cast and the unit speed sensor is right above the dip stick.
