How Long are your factory batteries lasting?
« on: January 13, 2018, 06:18:37 PM »
So, my Z8 is a 2015- built late in 2014. Battery always on a tender but has always taken longer to top-off then any other battery I ever had and now its been on the tender all day and won't top off..and it was only off the tender a day while I had it on my camper. Got a feeling its about to kick the bucket. Just started it's 4th year. so..maybe so. How long are others lasting? And what are you guys replacing them with?

I'm still on the original battery.  Its a 2015 vintage.  It seems to be going strong.  I occasionally put it on a tender during the winter.  I think that off road batteries have a tough life.  I would guess 4 years is an average life span.  Yuasa is a good battery.

Original battery here. 2013 so it has to be older than that. Started up last week after sitting since October without a tender.  Something drains it if I don't put the kill switch to off.

Yeah these use more power just sitting them any other I've seen. At least mine does. I've traced the usage to the dash pod so I'm thinking clock and/or other memorized items. Anyway, that's why I keep a tender on it. And the tender will shut off once it reaches full charge so it never over charges. I'm wondering also if that slight drain is also the reason it takes so long to top-off...and why it isn't now. If I isolate the battery to see, all the settings like speedometer calibration, maintenance reminder..ect.. will reset back to factory defaults. Might be worth it to see though.

With a Battery the life cycle is very hard to determine because so many factors are related to longevity for example Temperature, under charging, over charging, sulphated, etc. etc. but most of the time with a named brand battery it's age with these types of batteries 3 to 5 years would be a good life cycle I would say if your battery is four years old you have done a very good job of taking care it, might be time for a new one. Note you could take it to a auto parts store and have it load tested that will determine how good it still is.  My opinion buy a new one for peace of mind, just my opinion.

I will have to agree if it's 4 years old than it has done the job and time for a new one if it acts up. I will admit that I have had some off brand batteries last for 6 years and still going. I have no idea how. I am thinking that the winch solonoid being powered with the key off is not helping drain. Seemed to get worse after the added winch dash switch. Keeping the kill switch off is working and I'm just too lazy to do something about it right now. Too cold out.

Well, it finally topped-off so I have a little more time but yeah, might pull it and have it load tested anyway. Four years out of a 36-month battery is probably OK but getting close.

My battery started failing last ride so I replaced it. I kept the old battery as it did take a charge and hold it I had just never charged it before so I stuck the old battery under the drivers seat and am going to hook it up with a disconnect switch as an aux battery. Mine lasted me a year but it was at the dealer as a demo for about a year so I'm sure it took some abuse there being started a lot and moved a little. I replaced with a OEM replacement one. Cranks much better with the new battery.

A lot of the time a shortened battery life is due to improper activation, either by a parts sales clerk, or even at a dealership where the job of uncrating and setting up a new machine is often given to the most poorly trained shop lackey. A quick charge or hearing a parts salesman say 'Come back in an hour...' means he's going to ruin an AGM battery before you even see it.
