My ZForce 800 does not disengage the 4wheel drive.  Does anyone have an idea what I might look for in repairing the issue short of a shop visit?

Check the fuses first. Sitting there with the key on but not running, when you push and "un-push" the 4wd button, do you hear any sounds? If you do, and it's not changing the indicator on the dash, it's likely there is a problem with the actuator slide. Will have to remove the actuator to see what's happened. If you hear nothing, the actuator motor may not be getting power or it has an issue so check all the connections to it for corrosion.

Heck there have been some switches go bad right off the bat too.

It may have other issues deeper inside but this all is a good starting point.
