Helmet or no Helmet in a SXS?
« on: December 29, 2020, 11:02:19 AM »
I know some states like califo...cali....I hate to say that word, but that long skinny state on the west coast require people to wear a helmet in a side by side. Im wondering in your state, if not required, do you still wear a helmet?
Do you wear it on road or off road or both?

Ill tell you my story. I ride a lot in Arizona and helmets are not required. Thus I have never worn one. In my home state, they are required and I have always worn it.

On my last ride in my home state, I had my helmet on and I rolled my SXS. I went down a 15 cliff and landed on my roof. I believe I totaled the car but the  cage did its job wonderfully. I did however rack my head on the roll bar hard enough to break my helmet. I suffered no head injuries.

As I said, the cage is now junk, it crushed down on all 4 corners and my helmet is broken. Had I not been wearing a helmet, I'm very confident I would have received some level of head injury.

when I replace my car, sadly it wont be another CF Moto, helmets will become mandatory equipment on my car. No helmet, no ride.

Now I'm not advocating for helmet usage, its a personal choice and I get it. I'm just saying what will happen in my car.

and I'm curious how everyone else rides.

Helmets are not required in my state NM, unless you are under 18 (at least for motorcycles last I knew).  I always wear a helmet on my ATV, however I am guilty of not always wearing my helmet in my RZR.  My RZR is pre-ROPS, so my "roll bar" is not a roll bar, although I'm sure it would provide some protection.  Being that you hit hard enough to break the helmet, were you wearing your seatbelt?  I, like you, always make sure anyone else that rides in or on one of my machines wears a helmet.  Helmets also provide other benefits, for me the main one is that it keeps the sun off my head since I'm somewhat challenged in the hair department.

Either way, I'm glad that you were wearing yours at the time and it saved you from any injury. Experience is the best teacher.

Not required here in NM over 18 but as a rule, I most always wear one as well as any passenger (accept the dog). There is one exception to that rule and that is: If I know without dough there are no hazards of any kind and we won't be traveling any faster then 25MPH, then I won't wear one and my passenger, usually my wife, has the option. However she most always wears one anyway. But if it's new country..yes, always a helmet. We always wear eye protection though and harnesses...well I don't always wear the harness but have it ready should the need arise.

One of the things I do when taking any new passenger for the first time is a quick lesson on what to do in case of a roll-over. That is- to grab the grab bar with both hands and push your back into the set back hard as you can and don't let go. This not only helps hold you in the seat but ensures your arms will stay inside the roll cage during the roll. Very important. We practice that several times before I even start the engine. I do the same with the steering wheel.

I'd be interested in your reasons for not buying another Moto, and what choices you would consider as a replacement.

I absolutely LOVE my cf moto. I would recommend it to anyone. My main reason is there is not a dealer within 300 miles of me. The closest one is actually out of state.

Also I want to get a wider car with a longer wheel base.
If CF moto made a car with 18-20 inches of travel, 64+ inches wide (something that competes with the RZR xp1000) Id be all over it.  But I think Ill be going RZR or talon R.

One of the first things I did was install 4-point harnesses in mine...well, actually 3 point. On the very first run out to our mesa to test them I slipped off a soft edge and landed about 8 feet down on it's side. I was glad I had the harness...and my helmet on that day. A bruised shoulder is all I got that day....and two popped tire beads. Only had enough CO2 cartridges for one tire. Bought a compressor after that day. :)
