I've had the experience this weekend of removing some 30 odd push pin rivets on the Z8. Some of the pins came out fairly easy while others were more resistant and had to be destroyed in the process of removal.

I couldn't understand why the behavior was so variant, so I took a closer look at the holes in the panels. It turns out they are not all the same size. The diameters range from 7.5mm to a little over 8mm. It was much harder to get the pins out of the smaller holes.

I'm thinking this problem will only get worse if I buy the 8MM rivets recommended.  I really wanted to buy 7mm rivets, but could not find any. With few options available, I'm leaning towards buying the 8mm rivets, and I'm thinking about drilling out the holes so they are all the same size suitable for these larger rivets. Hopefully this will make removal at a later date a bit easier and more consistent. Has anyone tried this? Or found a more suitable rivet?

I have done some but find they end up loose after a few removals so I just leave them alone unless there is an issue my special pliers can't handle. I have several including the store-bought that most people have but I also have a set I built/modified...that no one has...just for the 8mm replacements that I went to. Maybe I'll share that puppy with you guys.

I think it just depends upon how much dirt gets into the groove.  Some come out, some are destroyed taking them out.  The dirty ones are usually the resistant ones.

I have the crap tool which may be half the problem.

I'll be getting the one this guy recommends.

I have those pliers he recommends, about A$9.00 from China. They work great and can also be used to cut zippy ties nice and flush so you don't scratch yourself on the cut ends.

I had a total revelation tonight while taking the rear plastics off this machine.  Want to get those pesky push pins out easily?  Spray some cleaner/degreaser on them.  I used Purple Power.  It soaked down into the groove and the center pins popped right out with the tool.  Couldn't believe it.

Something that I never posted was that I use Maxima SC-1 to shine-up mine which is just a silicone detailer. But as a silicone spray it also lubes stuff and so I noticed wherever I used it, the push pins always slip apart and out easier.
