Glowing header pipes
« on: July 29, 2021, 10:35:18 AM »
I have a quick question for you more experienced CfMoto guys. My 2021 Z1000's exhaust pipes seem to be running really hot. Like they begin to glow a bit close to the heads after a few minutes of idling and if I ride it they get pretty bright. Is this normal operation for the Z1000's? If you have run into this before would you be able to tell me what fixed it? Otherwise it runs great, idles great and has lots of power. Im just worried about starting a fire or melting a piston. Its pretty new and has already had its first service. Id love to bring it to a dealer to have it diagnosed properly but they are booking 6-8 weeks out now..... ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE GREAT!

Two things cause this to the most part. One, and you better check them now, is the valve lash...especially on the exhaust valves. Too little will close the gap and hold the valves open enough to leak, causing the exhaust port to get extra hot as well as burn the valve seats. So do that now. And Two, she is running very lean. Although its true all CFM machines do run very close to the line on lean, ir wouldn't take much to push it over the line. Just removing the spark arrester is enough or a slightly blocked injector...or a false reading from the O2 sensor or any other sensors will cause the ECU to shorten the pulse width. So check the valves first. If all is within spec and the rest is still 100% stock, take it in so there is a file on it just in case something happens.

It makes tones of power so I dont think that valve lash is my issue. Plus its only got like 250 kms on it. I thought I may have plugged the muffler with mud, resulting in a restricted flow (sunk it) so I put a RJWC pipe on it and no change. Any chance it could be a more simple issue like a plugged fuel filter? Im happy to do my own work on it even though it has warranty. Didnt realize that there was only 1 servicing dealer in my area and the other non CFMoto dealers look at me like ive got a six slice toaster on my head lol.

With that aftermarket muffler you will have to run a tuner as well. Any reduction in back pressure will result in leaning..leaning these can't afford. Test the fuel pressure and supply..but I do strongly suggest checking those valves.

I once had an m4 exhaust on a small kawasaki street bike that did that.  Called M4 and they said it was normal as they used thin walled stainless.  It would get almost translucent red.  Not saying it's right, prolly are lean, but if I was troubleshooting I would put the oem exhaust back on and see if it glows.
