Gear selector problem
« on: December 27, 2020, 02:01:58 PM »
Hi
I’m new to the forum and hoping someone can help me.
I have a 2018 Zforce 1000 and have been having problems with the transmission. When selecting high range it doesn’t always fully engage and I’ve found myself giving it a gentle blip on the throttle to check if it’s engaged. If it hasn’t it makes a grinding noise but then always drop into gear with a clunk. I have completely disconnected the selector rod and selected gears manually on the gear casing to rule out mis alignment. I then decided to remove the gear selector arm and cover and removed the selector cog to inspect for damage. All looked fine but in doing so the cog that the selector one engages on has moved and now won’t align and is stuck. No gear is being shown as selected on the instrument cluster as it was previously and appears to be in park or gear as won’t free wheel. Does anybody have any knowledge on these transmissions???
Thanks in advance

I know just enough to suggest it go to the shop now that the drum and linkage is out of alignment. You can try and re-set it by taking the end cap off again and try to re-align it.
Historically these have had one of of both of two problems. Most all shifter linkage was mis-adjusted at the factory and/or there have been many with warped or bent shift forks. That can't be fixed externally. Must be fully pulled-down for new ones. Warranty always covered that but now that you have opened part of it up, that may be voided.

Thanks for your response
I believe that it is out of warranty now anyway. If I decide to pull it apart will the bent forks be quite obvious. I’m presuming the engine has to be removed to do this
Thanks

They have ways to measure the forks to know what's going on, and yes, it will mean a full removal and complete disassembly which a full rebuild as the heads and cylinders have to come off to split the case. Not a job for most people. Best to see if you can get it back to where it was before and run a few tests first.
