Full aluminum skid plate
« on: July 11, 2016, 06:53:08 AM »
I never was happy with the skid plate that came on my Z Force 800ex.  IMO there is no room in off roading for a plastic skid plate.  I know some people swear by HDPE plastic and it is ok but i worry about it in the cold (getting brittle) and also on direct impacts.  So in an effort to bullet proof the Z Force I went with 1/8" aluminum and made a under belly skid plate to protect my running gear.  There is an access panel that is not mounted in the pictures below but it has since been mounted up.  Also I plan on cutting some holes in it to let water drain and also bolting from the side of the frame rails and removing all the underside bolts.  That gives you a perfectly smooth belly pan to slide on.  The skid plate is bent up around the frame rails everywhere it could be to give it a good sliding motion when you get to rocks/ logs.  I have done these before and you can fully jump a machine and land it on a rock on the skid plate and you will be just fine. it also strengthens the under side because it ties all of it together under there and you would have to bend the WHOLE frame to bend even one bracket.
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

Its not that much extra weight.  The whole sheet maybe weighs 20lbs or so so i would say that the skid plate alone added 5-8lbs over the plastic one at most.  The plastic one weighs a bit also.  The rest of that sheet will be to make A arm guards and covers for the front and rear diffs.  Trust me it will all get used LOL.  I have never seen anyone blow through a sheet of 1/8" aluminum with a SxS landing on rocks and everything else.  I want to protect all my running gear/brake lines/coolant lines.  Those are the things that get you out of the woods when your 30 miles from the nearest town and walking is not a good option.

I really love watching you guys modify and upgrade something. I really do marvel at the mechanical know-how, as I just never did inherit any of that from my Dad, who was a mechanic for over 30+ years. He knew early on his son was not following in his footsteps, but I did find my niche with computers.

Looks great!!!!!!!! Just had my purchasing guy quote a 4"X8" sheet of 1/8" aluminum for me today and listed at 58lbs for the hole sheet. Just wondering what the sheet cost in your area. $119.71 from the supplier we use here in PA.

Friend of mine said he can make one on his plasma cutter for about $170.
Maybe giving him a call.  If he can bust those out would be worth it.

Had .125 and .190 sheets quoted. Getting .125 delivered to the plant tomorrow and I will drag it over to the shear and cut it up to size. One of the perks of being the Maintenance Manager of a plant with a full machine, sheetmetal and welding shop right outside my office door. I scrapped my first full door design and have the new templates made and fitted for the new full door design for my Uforce. Will just need to source some aluminum full surface mount machine hinges. Glass reinforced hinges are all I can find at the local MRO suppliers
