Fast winch recommendation
« on: February 04, 2021, 06:21:14 PM »
Need a new winch for a 400s that is fast, mostly for plowing. My el’cheapo superwinch LT2000 is finally at its end and it’s so slow it’s nearly impossible to plow.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Being in up state NY you have snow to deal with for long periods every winter....and winches, although many use then for their plow lifts, were never meant to be used that way. Anything you buy will last must less then people south of you..obviously. Man I think for you I would suggest a dedicated plow lift...one that's meant to raise and lower every few seconds and not kill the battery or charging system. Sure, get yourself a new winch to replace that warn-out one but consider something that's going to gibe you fast and solid service all winter...for years. I thing...at least for folks like you it would be a good investment.

This is one of Warn's for theirs...yeah its a little pricey, but there are others maybe more reasonable. And consider the replacement cost of decent winches...even this isn't bad.

Thank you for all the info. I’ve seen those actuators for a while now. I’ll check them out, but your right, it adds a significant cost.
I’m going to checkout Tractor Supply today and see what they have in stock. For the price of these actuators, there are several very nice winches. I’ll have to think about it.

The "Badlands" winches from Harbor Freight are a cost effective alternative - they work pretty well and if you can find a 20 or 40% off a single item coupon it makes it worthwhile to not a high end winch

I looked at all available options for raising this plow setup. Since my current winch was old and slow and needed replacement, I ended up buying a Badlands 3500 series. According to the packaging, this is their fastest winch. I also received the power angle today so I installed that.
I’ll admit that I was hesitant about buying a harbor freight winch, but I’m not anymore. I’m impressed with the quality of this unit and it is very quick.
Even the wiring they include is nice quality stuff, with a hefty solenoid and rocker switch.
I got the warranty with it so if it starts causing problems I can swap it out at my local harbor freight.

Because of the unique highrise pushtube, using a lift actuator wasn’t an option I could choose. In fact, if I had to choose one thing I didn’t care for about this plow - the lift point placement. It’s not far enough forward, but that’s because of the power angle.

Anyhow, the plow is finally all set and the power angle and winch work great.

Is the Power Angle set up universal to all plows or is it specific to that plow ?

The Kolpin Power Angle is specifically made to bolt onto Kolpin pushtubes.
Warn made one but recently discontinued it, I believe. Kimpex, Polaris, Denali, cycle country and other plow manufacturers make their own versions that bolt onto their plows.

The Kolpin and Warn units utilize gearing to turn the plow, but most others are simply heavy duty linear actuators.
You can find generic universal actuator style power angle kits on google very easily. I just found one for a friend yesterday. These actuators are all 12vt electric, so with a couple of brackets and a simple rocker switch you can put together your own.

Check with the manufacturer of your pushtubes first though. As an example, I found a Denali power angle kit yesterday. It goes for $699. That is pretty expensive. Mine was less than half of that cost.
There is a seller on eBay that is incorrectly listing the Kolpin power angle as universal, fyi.

Good luck

Thanks for the information, Sometimes I am facing the same issue then my friend solves it by telling me about a site that gives so much information about the winches and it is very helpful in our daily life and I am sure if you search it there you can get some helpful infomation.
