Extended Warranty
« on: July 12, 2018, 07:39:13 AM »
Any thoughts?  An additional 4 years for $1100?  I'm still reading the fine print to see what mods would violate the warranty and if it's worth it.  I have rebuilt dozens of motorcycle four stroke engines and trannies.  I don't weld so it may be worth it for that, if the frame cracks (highly doubt it as I will not be in race mode and will be adventuring with my wife as co-driver).  $1100 buys a lot of mods I'd like.  Any thoughts?

If you know how to work on them just do it yourself. The time it takes for dealerships to get to your machine and fix it, it will be down a month and you will be aggravated. I have a broken axle right now and maybe something broken in the diff. Axle I have coming for $140 and the parts can be replaced in the diff I can do it myself in a day rather than wait a month for a dealership.

I never buy extended warranties on anything. These warranties are the biggest profit maker for those issuing them. That means that I am far more likely to pay more than I receive.
Because once you start the extended warranty lifestyle you will buy them for your TV, your washer-dryer, your car, your ATV, your lawn mower, your vacuum cleaner...
Then if one of them breaks and you get an extended warranty fix, you say "There!" "Look how much I saved with that warranty," and you disregard all the other premiums you paid that didn't buy you a fix. And you are money behind.
And if nothing breaks you have paid all that money for nothing.

I just don't buy them, and I have never regretted it.  8)

I say if anything major is going to happen it will within the factory warranty period especially on one that is actually used. I only have 1200 miles on my 2015 and only had about 700 on it when the one-year warranty period ran out..not enough for anything to show up. But like you, working as a motorcycle mechanic in my younger days and all around mechanic/fabricator throughout my life I have a fair amount of background and wasn't worried too much about it. The only time I was ever talked into an extended warranty was with my 43K Nissan and that was an extended electrical systems warranty because of all the extras. Never needed it. A solid waste of 900 bucks. Never again. I think for you that 1100 bucks would be better spent elsewhere.

My thoughts, if you finance you may not be able to afford a major failure. So the amount of $1100.00 added to the monthly payment isn't so bad.

Is the warranty offered manufacture backed or third party, big difference when the dealer submits a claim.

You need to be fair as an owner, you want to modify beyond the original design....awesome! Why would would that be a warranty consideration?

My story about ext wtty. I purchase a fancy $2500.00 plasma flat screen from Samsung & opted out of ext wtty. Less than 2 years catastrophic failure of the screen......2k for the repair. I did not repair & called Samsung, explained I opted out of the ext wtty & would accept partial responsibility for that. They told me "sorry" & nothing they can do, no split the bill, no we not will cover the parts, no we will not offer a discount on a replacement, no nothing......piss off. It was important that I notified them of the LG replacement we purchased, the LG washer dryer combo & various other items.  The Samsung dumb phones are next  ;)

Like everything, no right or wrong answers, what is best for you?
