Dust behind my Unifilter??
« on: September 29, 2019, 05:02:29 PM »
We went riding yesterday in extremely dusty conditions. We haven't had any rain except a spotty shower around the area for at least 45 days. I knew my filter was gonna be extra dusty and it was when I removed the air box cover, but much to my surprise when I removed the filter I found a thin film of dust on the coupler from the filter connection to the air box. clamps were tight and there was no evidence of any dust being drawn in between the connections where the Unifilter slips over the coupler or where the coupling inserts into the air box boot. I feel like I oiled the filter properly last cleaning using mineral spirits, warm soapy dawn water, and Fab 1 spray oil. We only ran about 45 miles due a cut tire that ended our day early. We own two other atvs (Suzuki Eiger with a K&N oiled pleated filter, and Kymco MXU450i with its stock oiled foam filter) that were with us and they were following us all day and their filters were really dusty and there was also evidence of dust behind them too.  The Unifilter is hard to oil and work it in due to the spring inside. Any ideas on what happened or can conditions be too dusty to ride in sometimes? Thanks!

You know, the only thing on any of these that catches the dust is the sticky oil or resin that the surfaces of the open cells are coated with. There is a limit as to how much that surface can get coated with dust and still expect new dust to stick as it comes sailing by. I suspect you found the physical limits. I suggest you only use the FAB-1 cleaner with the oil and nothing else to clean it with. You don't want anything on those cell surfaces when applying the oil, not even water. I let mine dry completely for several hours before using lots of oil worked well through it, then I stuff a paper towel inside and roll it up to get any extra off the inside so it doesn't migrate into the intake track and coat the Temp/Map sensor. I've had my first one packed with dust and dirt bad enough it was having some trouble running above 3500 and still nothing got by it. But then it wasn't that fine coal dust or talc either. You may want to consider a particle separator. I am...but only because I am tired of clearing my CVT filter every 30 miles of road driving. I can get several rides out of the other one...and the one in the airbox I only check it once a year now cause nothing gets down there to it.

That's what I'm leaning toward NMK is the SB Particle Separator also, you say you're gonna plumb your CVT intake into it also? I'm interested in doing that also if possible, the ole kill two birds with one stone!

Yeah, S&B told me that their unit for the YXZ can put out almost twice the volume needed to feed our 800 engines and CVTs together so there is no issue using it to feed both. And some already have with great success. I am going to leave my stacks on it with both filter cans, mount the separator high enough to pull-in from the back side of the roof and not extend over it...much..if at all, then their discharge is 3.5"s so just a turbo silicone "T", some short tube and a couple of 90s should do it and not interfere with the rear view much at all.

This video also sold me, along with a friend that was replacing his Polaris Ranger filter every two weeks but now goes all year.

I'm thinking of something like this-keeping most of what I already have and installing it to just peak-over the roof.

That's what I was thinking for a S/B mount though I was also considering the side outlet one, if plumbing permits.

That will work, I'll position mine on the rail between the seats like the others, probably route the intake through the front  grille to keep maximum storage space in the bed being I plan to mount a spare tire somewhere in the rear area. As far as the intake plumbing, I was looking at a 3 1/2" x 2-2 1/2" silicone Wye off the S&B elbow after entering the grille and probably from there 2 1/2" 45 degree aluminium pipe cut to fit with a few more couplings the rest of the way to the engine and cvt intakes. Gonna wire it up to the fuel pump power.

Just my thought. That looks like a long way for the cvt to pull air with just the fan on the clutch. I’m thinking the intake is going to create a vacuum and a vortex starving the cvt. Any Thoughts.

Don't think so but I do have a temp gauge on it so if there is any issue, as clean as it is coming out of the separator, I'll just take the filter out. If there is still an issue I always have my booster fan..or even better I'll get a real 180CFM+ CVT fan and install it where the booster is now.

By the look of it the intake plumbing is big enough dimension that I don't think it ought to pose an intake restriction. An NMK style inline impeller fan couldn't hurt though.

I forgot about your fan. At least you have a gauge to keep an eye on it.
