I am being told that it is requirement of my warranty that the dealer do the first service.  Is there any truth to that?  I am in Ontario Canada if it matters.

It should be outlined in your warranty paperwork. Here it didn't when I bought mine, although the service work done by the customer must be documented and done as per schedule.

I was told by mine no, as long as it is done by the book so to speak.
I picked mine up in spokane though a 70 odd mile drive.
I did document mine and the setting and such as well.
but that was told to me by the dealer as well.

The dealers in Nova Scotia require them to do the first service

I was told the same thing from the dealer in Reno. I'm planning on doing it since it needs a repair under warranty that I'll have done at the same time.
