cvt bolts loctite delete lol
« on: September 27, 2022, 05:01:28 AM »
Hey everyone,

It's been awhile since I posted.  I actually had the primary bearing in my zforce500 go out the other day.  Replaced with another oem ($115 ouch!) but when I put all back together I didn't use loctite on the shaft bolts, I actually used a bit of anti seize.  I must have spaced out on that one.  I've only tested it around my house.  Should I be tearing back into it and trying to clean the anti seize off and put loctite back on?

Bolts and nuts with the correct..or enough.. torque don't usually require loctite/thread locker. The stretching action of torquing is usually enough. I don't use loctite on mine but follow my rule on torquing CFM retainers which is to "spec plus 5"...ftlbs in this case. And always use a torque wrench. I also use an anti seize on mine as well. Never had any problem.

Thank you for the reassurance!  Guys on FB forums think it'll explode.  I wanted to check with you because I trust what you say over 10 of them lol.  Have you ever used torque limiter sticks?  I just discovered them and they have an 80lb one I'm thinking of trying on the clutches tonight.  I will first try it on a lug on my truck and verify with a proper torque wrench, but that would really save having to hold the clutch down for us guys that don't have a fancy tool like you do!

I've never used anything like that...always had torque wrenches of one type or another. Really should have one for yourself and it doesn't have to be a 450-dollar Snap-on like mine, just one from Harbor Freight or a used Craftsman off ebay is better then nothing. You will need it for soo many things. And remember my rule- "spec plus 5". That 80lb limiter won't be enough and impacts won't allow the smooth & precise stretching of bolts like a torque wrench will.

Oh I have torque wrenches, 3 actually.  I find it difficult to get on that secondary without a cool tool like you made, that Y wrench.  Especially by myself, then put 85ft.lbs. on the secondary at the same time.  That's why I thought this would be good at least for the clutch bolts.  If I check them every 300 miles or so, do you still feel 80ft.lbs is a bad idea?

From my view, two things- one no impact will provide the smooth introduction into the elasticity zone of any bolt. In fact it can cause micro-fracturing of the materials causing lowered stretching and recovery abilities so I would never use one unless I had no choice. And two, 80ftlbs..or lbsft is under my rule of thumb on CFM bolts so to me even with a torque wrench it isn't enough. It might be fine...I just choose a different path. Thousands of people use impacts on theirs all the time without any issues...but some do have issues and that's the stats I want to stay out of. :)
