CFMoto CF188

Hello All,

I'm hoping I can get some ideas on what to look at here. I have a CFMoto CF188 it's on a 2013 Chironex Spartan. We just brought this unit up to our isolated cabin (boat access only, so it was barged here) for my FIL to use to get around the property. Long story short he had a bit of a crash with it after only a week :( it would have been at very low speed, but stop abruptly against a tree stump. He wasn't hurt (except his pride), but the unit was able to reverse and drive forward for a brief period then nothing. When I arrived a few days ago I was able to get the unit to reverse but then it stopped when in L or H moving forward. I wasn't able to get the unit into Neutral after that or reverse, I then decided to disconnect the drive shafts and tow it to a place I can work on it. This is what I have observed so far.

 - No physical damage to the exterior
 - Engine runs fine, just doesn't move
 - Belt is still good and meets spec width
 - have the unit up on jack stands and the CVT Cover off
 - no grinding noise when spinning the Clutches
 - I'm able to shift through L,H,N,R without issue
 - I disconnected the front and rear driveshafts to be able to tow it to a place I could work on it, and test if the problem was with the front or read diff.
 - If I spin the secondary sheave clockwise in L or H it will spin for a few rotations then stop. When it does spin the front and rear outputs shafts are spinning, If I then shift
into neutral and back into L or H I can spring the secondary again for a few rotations.
-  While in R I can spin the secondary sheave without issue and front and rear output's move.

I plan on getting deeper into the CVT tomorrow to see what's happening just hoping I can get some ideas on what to look for with these symptoms. I'm really hoping to not have to barge it down again.

Is the secondary stoping a normal thing, and I'm misinterpreting it?

Thank you in advance for any insights you may have.

Far from an expert here, but

Couldn't the ride be towed in neutral?

When spinning the secondary sheave, does it stop after a few rotations of secondary sheave. Or do you just stop turning sheave.

If you stop. Try turning it until the axles make a few complete rotations. Maybe 10-15. Just to make sure.

If the axles stop before you stop turning sheave then it is probably a broken gear in transmission or differential.

To determine if its the trans or differentials, you may have to disconnect one or both and try turning the sheave again for the axles to make a few complet rotations.

Again I'm far from an expert, but that sound like a logical approach.

I busted a trans on a riding mower and had similar issues.

Best of luck.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like exactly what happened to my 16 uforce 500. A gear fell of inside the transmission and bound everything else up. At first I lost reverse, then got it back. Had a hard time shifting it into any gear and then it seemed to be working fine. We got a little ways down the trail and it locked up completely and ended up having to drag it on the tow truck to take to the dealer. The diagnosis was the "reverse engine gear" fell of and bound up the other gears.
