Best GPS Tracking System?
« on: July 24, 2018, 08:53:20 AM »
Looking to get some input form everyone.  What is the best GPS system you are using?  I'm looking for something that can tell me where I have gone, has a good map base (and can tell me what trails are available for UTV use (50 inch particularly)), wireless, downloadable so I can make cool videos like NMK, etc.

Thanks

That's a tough one. Some have great downloadable maps and trails like my Magellan TRX7 & Back Country Navigator I have on a 7" tablet, but the tablets they use are not back lite well and some features aren't there. Others that have most everything like the Lowrance Elite or HPS series are so expensive, it's hard to justify. Garmin may have one of the best all around setups but I always wanted a larger screen then what my GPSmap 60CS has. They too are a tad expensive. One option I have been looking into is one a fellow video maker friend of mine is using and seems to like it well. Has everything as far as tracking and downloadable maps he says and is cost effective as it runs on a tablet..but remember tablets are not built to see well in the sun..not enough back lighting. But his seems to and I'll post some sample vids. He uses OruxMaps which is a GPS app on a Samsung 7" tablet with GPS and Compass. He says he can always see it and I can see it well in his videos where I can't mine. I downloaded it into my older Samsung tablet I run BackCountry on but it's no better in the sun then it is..which is my biggest bitch. Check it out. He runs two, the big one is the one I'm talking about. In mine the 500-dollar Magellen is clearly not as bright/viewable.

I don't have lots of experience with different GPS' but my Garmin Montana has a whack of features and a bigger screen than my older Garmin 60csx and its postage stamp size screen.

Only thing is it has screen touch controls so if you try to wipe the dust off it thinks you are inputting a dozen commands and it goes off on a tangent.

Yeah..I run into that with all the touch screens..can't wipe the dust off without it going nuts...gota put it in sleep mode first. I think I don't like that either.  Here's a very old test vid on my first tablet attempt. It's with my 10"

This one has both the 10" and the 7". The 7" shows better after 1/2 way through but still, both as you see are hard to see where Mudcon's isn't. I think my 7" is a T4 and his is a T7.

I love my  Magellan TRX7. It allows you to track where you have been as well as download trails other have been on. You can add landmarks to the trails with pictures or icons. It also doubles as a table. You can check your email and send texts and such while on the trail.  Great unit.
