Anybody wreck one?
« on: April 13, 2018, 01:23:32 AM »
Well, this is embarrassing. 19 miles on the clock and my wife tips the brand new 800 trail over. Downhill, decreasing radius left turn and off camber to boot. Carrying too much speed, so when she stabbed the brakes and unweighted the rear wheels, the front tire grabbed and knocked us over on our side. Nobody hurt, and we weren't going but 10-15 mph max.   $7000 in repairs, frame damage, roll bar tweaked and the passenger door banged up are the big ticket part costs. About $1000 each for the frame and complete roll bar, and you can't buy just one door, you gotta buy a pair for $589. Then 36 labor hours at just under $100 per hour. Is this typical damage for any side by side, or are these CFMoto units a little frail?  I was a lot surprised the frame and roll cage got bent from what I thought was a fairly low speed high side fall. I've knocked ATVs over and had nearly zero damage.

Ouch!

Lots of folks have tipped their toys without issue; perhaps not at 15mph though.

Can you elaborate on what "tweaked" means and the frame damage?

I've been involved with two wrecks, one was a right off the other heavily damaged like yours. Both are excessive speed & very poor driver choices......I'm being nice  ::)

Everybody walked away, ROPS cages did an incredibly job of saving the occupants from themselves. The totally wreck drove the occupants off the mountain with broken rear axle & nearly everything bent, busted or smashed.

The second wreck that was repaired also was driven out. Broken front axle & damaged front diff beyond repair.

I will completely disagree with your comment about these units being frail, in fact your comment about speed unless the unit landed on solid rock....... ???

Both of wrecks I'm mention the operators did not hide what happened & how fast they were going.
ZF 800 LX Trail, stock for now.......not for long.

I laid mine over going down hill into a crevice but it was mostly sand and less then 2mph. Only slight damage. Chuddly had put his through pure hell..totaled when he got it and totaled it again while racing it..always repaired it..frame was always able to accept repairs. Hard to believe there was so much damage from what you said happened...but  maybe there was other factors involved no one is aware of. I would be leery of any dealer that listed so many structural issues and would want proof..that's just me. Believe it or not, not all companies are reputable. :)

If you’ll re read my original post, I asked the question “are they a lillle frail”, I did not accuse them of being so. For all I know a Razor or Wildcat trail might have experienced similar damage in a similar situation. I’ve dropped and rolled sit on top style ATVs before many times without this kind of result. I was simply asking a question of other forum members for their experiences, I was not doing any brand bashing, I was simply posing a question.

And now that you mention it, it was a very hard pan, rocky area. And the force of impact on the door part that extends out to give more elbow room seemed to focus the impact energy at the door mount points which bent the roll cage and subsequently the frame where the roll cage is mounted to the frame.

Bring it had only 19 miles on it, I believe the dealer is quoting my insurance company what it’s going to take to put it back to factory new condition. It’s driveable, just scuffed up a bit with a roll cage off kilter.

I don't think SXS and specifically CF Moto SXS are particularly frail but as you describe, in this incident you had both forward moving energy to dissipate, and gravity assisted energy. It sounds like it pivoted over on a heavily braked one front wheel at some speed, and landed full force on that side. (And when you're going downhill the ground ahead is further away than it is on the flat)
This would amount to a much greater impact than the quite common flop-over somebody gets when they unwisely try and crop a donut on the level ground. Sounds like it took a pretty big hit.

It may be unfair to compare ATV rollovers as in those cases the machine, being roughly ball shaped, tends to carry on like a tumbleweed rather than taking one big hit.
Not taking an adversarial position, I'm just trying to understand it. That's a bitter pill.

I feel for your frustration at having a shiny new SXS sustain that much damage that soon in its life.
As mentioned, I'd want to see it confirmed that the dealer's assessment is accurate just in the course of being a careful and prudent consumer.
Nothing wrong with that.

Good luck.

I’ve not heard one way or another from my insurance yet. But, total loss was mentioned as being very close to the threshold. I’m not sure how to feel about either scenario. Having never experienced any kind of total type loss, I don’t have a feeling for how badly I’m going to get screwed or not screwed as a result.

Some guys will file the claim than buy it back. If you can fix it yourself this might be an option.

If you have any insurance questions, fire away.  It would help to know what kind of policy you have (actual cash value, replacement cost, agreed value, etc).  If you want, you can PM me the specifics and I can look it over.

Generally speaking, the insurance company is going to write to replace everything that's damaged.  Lots of that stuff you can live with, so even if it is a total loss, it may make financial sense to retain salvage and fix it yourself.

Repair check is on the way. Insurance elected to repair. With the new frame comes a new VIN so there is some extra process regarding the state of Idaho and a new VIN assigned to my title when the repair is complete.

Any chance of getting some pictures of the damage so we have a clearer idea of what happened?

Hmm, I didn't think of taking any good pictures.  And now the dealer has it torn apart waiting on parts.  My son did take a picture from his drone after the crash.  It isn't a very good closeup of the damage; I uploaded the overhead image to Google Photos - https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPY_XA2LgzBGaj36e58RDwf90GtFiB7VQ3Ruvjo
