4 Front wheels?
« on: December 07, 2017, 01:41:41 PM »
Anyone, besides me, consider doing 4 front wheels ans say 28's all the way around? See that on a lot of the RZR 1000's just wanted some of your thoughts.
One big PRO is that one spare would work all the way around. But what are the "cons" to this , if any?

I used to think there would be a problem because of the engine weight on back but enough have done it with no issues so...must be OK.

You will lose a little traction on the rear going with a skinnier tire on the back but it is probably not too noticeable. You will keep the rotating mass down with a lighter tire. I would like to run 10" wide all around myself and the only needing one spare is great. It will probably spin the rear tires easier and you may slide easier with the less weight and smaller contact patch on the rear.

As long the spare tire is the same diameter as the rear wheel, does it really matter if you carry a front wheel as a spare and use it on the rear if necessary?

Yeah..That's what I would do. You can put the fronts on anywhere but the fat rears and that offset would have a problem up front.

to get you home it will work for sure. Unfortunately for me I had a rear flat that I repaired for a spare so the only spare I have is a rear tire and still don't have it on a rim

I bought another front rim and fitted with a 2nd hand tyre for my spare. The diameter is the same, just not as wide and if I ever need it to get me home it will be better than walking.

Same Tires on my ATV / SBS a few years ago. It is in my surrounding not uncommon to do that after buying new rims.

I’m thinking you really wouldn’t lose much traction. The old army jeeps went everywhere with 4 thin tires on them.  Don’t remember ever seeing old photos of those with wide rear tires. 😉

I had no Problems at all. The Canam had 26-9-14; the RZR had 27-8,5-14.

To make a wider path for the rear wheels in mud costs also power and speed.

In mud I think 4 same size is better for traction you won't get as much float in the rear and dig to the bottom faster, though on deep mud same thing it will sink to the bottom faster without the float. On rock and hard pack the larger contact pattern will have better traction.

Good call, guess it depends on what riding you do?

I would say so, but the differences we are talking about are almost negligible. I say having one spare that fits all trumps everything and puts me on team same size.

Agreed Red! I'm thinking anything that improves my chances of not walking home is a plus. When in doubt , winch it out right!?!  ;D
