2018 500s no start
« on: July 20, 2018, 09:37:02 AM »
I have a new 18’ 500s with roughly 250 miles. The machine is not sending power to the fuel pump, nor ignition coil. I do have a flashing efi light, is that protocol for the computer to kill power to those systems? It will sometimes cut on and run perfectly fine but that’s not happening anymore.my relays and fuses all seem to be good but it’s filthy at the connections with dirt. Is there anything that I could use to clean out the whole fuse and relay block ?

Well it does sound like bad connections somewhere and canned contact cleaner does work wonders for blasting-out that kind of stuff. Might start with the fuse block and work outwards.

Is there a fuse or relay that would cause the CPU not to send power to those components? Such a the fuel pump and ignition coil

I have cleaned the fuse block and relays, I now have power to the fuel pump when I turn over the machine but still not getting spark to the plug nor power to the coil, any ideas?

I would suspect the ignition switch.

It’s throwing a code of some sort, I would imagine the ecu doesn’t allow power to any components with the light flashing. With more clean up this weekend, when cranking the fuel pump would kick on, but only when cranking. No spark still.  No power to the coil. With the ignition switch and kill switch is there anyway to check issue besides the obvious corrosion signs? The closest cfmoto shop is 2 months out on work which is hard to believe and I don’t trust. 1st week of owning the machine, was out riding and cut it off for 5 mins for a break and wouldn’t crank again.  Got home around 2am and left it on the trailer took it straight to them. Didn’t really look any further than the battery connections. I was fed up as I’ve only had it such a short time.  Few hours after I dropped it off they called and said it seem to be Hydrolocked and needed to be torn apart, that I was looking at around a 1000$ and of course wasn’t under warranty. I pick it up a few days later they haven’t taken the 1st bolt off so I don’t see how they could diagnose it to be locked up, turns out it was the starter and the cable, the starter lug was loose on the inside of the starter itself.  I’ve since then replaced it but this shows you what kind of people I have to work with.  Needless to say I’d much rather do this myself.  Love to get my hands on a PDA so I could trouble shoot this rather than a multi meter and test light.

Try the manual. The wiring should be similar to the 500 ho or 400. A meter should tell you if there is a problem

It's really sad, and this seems to be very commonplace nowadays. Dealers and shops that really don't know what they are doing and just charging customers thousands of dollars for things that aren't even a problem. Any somewhat mechanically inclined person seems to be able to do a better job at diagnosing problems than the "certified" techs. This isn't everywhere, but it seems very common with all the forums I am on.

The only thing i haven’t checked is to see if I’m getting power to my fuses and relays.  I know my main relay is working along with both the headlights.  And the starter relay.  I’ve getting it to turn over with no problems it’s just not getting any spark.  With me cleaning the fuses and relays the other day I was able to get the fuel pump to kick on while turning over.  Which still isn’t right in my opinion it should be coming on as I turn my switch on. I went to another shop an hour an a half away who also sales them. The manager seemed like they could diagnose it quickly.  Left it Wednesday, called Saturday to see if they have tried anything or figured out something I didn’t.  They mechanic is an oil changer at best. The don’t have a scan tool, and the manager said he’s mechanic is too new for something like this...... he didn’t call me to tell me anything I had to call him. These cfm dealers have got to get there sh*t together.

My 2017 new old stock 500 HO EPS would not start one day. Turned out the fuel pump and crankshaft position sensor both failed. New fuel pump was the PN for a 2018 500 HO EPS and the sensor was the same PN. Unit running again. Failed at 161 miles.

A dealership shop that would diagnose an ATV they just sold as hydro-locked, without any history or evidence of water immersion and without even looking for such evidence, and that throws out a figure of $1000 to go look, well that shop I would describe in a bit stronger terms than 'don't know what they're doing'.
That place is incompetent and/or corrupt and isn't doing the marque nor it's own customers any good at all.

I hate doing this as I don't know how to test them but it seems there have been a lot of ECU issues floating around...

If you can blow out with compressed air first the contact cleaner ..
