2014 trail tracker running hot
« on: September 26, 2021, 02:21:37 PM »
Took the bike for a ride this weekend. We had to do alot of road running to get to the trails, seemed like 30mins of driving at 70km the bike wasn't able to cool fast enough and the bike was getting too hot causing the MIL light to come on. Once we got to the trail the bike ran good no MIL light for the entire trail ride. On the way back was about 45 mins of road running and again the bike ran hot again. Any ideas on how I can get the bike to run cooler? Possibly a new water pump? Temp gauge is not currently registering so the dash didn't display any bars the entire ride but you can tell the bike is running hot, I can smell and feel the heat coming from it while running the road. I can only assume when the MIL light is coming on it's due to overheating. Rad is full of coolant, rad fan and switch is functioning, going to replace the temp sensor on the cylinder in hopes the it will register the temp again on the gauge. I just need to know if I can correct this or if I'm wasting my time?

Replace the thermostat along with the temp sensor. She's acting like it has a flow restriction so the first thing to look at is that thermostat. The temp sensor, if that is an issue, will also send a false or no reading to the ECU..which actually should generate an error code right off the bat. But when one reaches a certain temperature it also generates an error code making the MIL light also flash so..the temp sensor may not be the problem with no read-out on the dash. Probably a pod problem but it never hurts to be safe..and as it is cheap...why not.

Installed a new thermostat, the new one was slightly different then the old thermostat. The bike is definitely running worse with the new thermostat, the fan isn't kicking on at all making me think the coolant isn't circulating enough. Other then putting the old thermostat back in I'm not too sure what my next move will be. I'm really curious about the pump, is there anyways to tell if it needs to be replaced other then just replacing it?

Over 75% of all the fan switches...aka thermoswitches between 2014 and 2016 failed. you needed to replace it first. It's the one on the radiator. For now unplug it and jumper the harness side. The fan should run all the time. If it doesn't, there is something wrong with either the fan relay or power supply..so check the fuses too.

I believe the thermal switch is still working, jumping the fan starts the fan but seems as if the engine is over heating. Makes me think it's not getting proper circulation as before the thermostat replacement the fan was cycling normally. Just running out of ideas here the only things left to replace on the cooling system is the temperature sensor on the cylinder and the water pump.

I read if I run the bike with the rad cap off I should be able to see the coolant circulating, which when I do so I don't see any circulation I'm worried the different thermostat is making things worse

Might have an air pocket. Lift the front end, remove the radiator cap, squeeze all the rubber hoses, run it lifted with the cap off and watch for circulation and heated coolant. Fill to top before putting cap on..no air gap with these.

Ok will try this tomorrow, you think when I replaced the thermostat it may have caused an air lock?

Raised the front end of the bike and got alot of air out of the system. Ran the bike 3 times kept topping up the rad after each time I ran it until the coolant stopped going down and the fan was cycling like normal. Noticed behind the oil cooler the rad is pretty plugged with dried mud so going to remove the oil cooler and blast the rad this weekend. The water temp sensor wasn't reading do to a bad connection I believe, when I played with the wires it would start working so again this week I hope to clean up the connection maybe cut out a kink that was in the wires. So still have some work to do but once I get all those things done it should be good to go

Unplugged the rad with water and coil cleaner foam. Then started the bike up and now the fan won't go on unless it's jumped. Had a few air bubbles when I removed rad cap so I guess I'll need to raise the front end again and see if I can get this thing running properly again. What a headache are all bites this much of a pain in the ass when it comes to cooling

You cleaned the fins and the fan no longer goes on?

How hot is the engine getting (dash gauge)?
How hot is the radiator getting (Thermal reader)?

Yeah how hot is it getting? Maybe it just doesn't need to run.
