Spacers for the X8
« on: January 04, 2022, 07:42:27 AM »
There are spacers for sale, but very little on the forums to find about it.

I found my 2012 X8 is about 2" wider in the front so wanted to start with making the rear 1" wider per side. I like the look of equal width.

I read a wider stance provides better road handling which makes sense. I also understand a wider vehicle needs more space on the trails.

Are there a sweet spot for spacers that makes it better all over or is it just up to you to descide?

Thinking if I add 1" spacers in the rear, I could get another set of 2" spacers later to swap in the rear and bring the 1" up front to keep my equal stance but with a total of 2" more width all over.  Makes sense?

Spacers need to be from metal, but I will 3D print a center piece for then to align the rims to the hub. Rims got a 63.5mm center bore and the nut on the driveshaft got a 36mm flange to center on. The 3D printed piece will only align stuff, not be carrying any loads. It would be like the plastic rings you click on aftermarket rims for your car, just shaped to fit this application.

Centering on all CFMotos is done by the tapered lugs. They call that Lug-centric. Others use the hub to the wheel. That's called hub-centric and those use a flat lug. All CFMs use a 4x110 pattern with lug-centric centering. All up to the 800s..all of then use a 10mm stud. All over 800 use a 12mm stud...still the 110 pattern and still lug centering. If you want to use different rims that need hub-centering, there are adaptor spacers available in any width.

Your X8 brings up a question: To my knowledge no IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) CFM or any other were built with wider distances between the hubs on front then rear. SRAs (Solid Rear Axles)..yes. Did you measure with the wheels off between the wheel mounting surfaces? If so, this is news-worthy information and becomes a problem for those folks wanting to "square-up" their track. To answer your question on width,  anything that moves the load farther away from the wheel bearing increases the cantilever effect on not only the bearing but the suspension bushings and ball joints as well. It also changes the steering geometry. Statistically speaking those that have gone with 1.5" or less report little or no effects..although I can confirm that I am now on my third set of rear knuckle bushings thanks to the spacers withing 2000 miles. This time only the lower show wear. Odd. Many others that have gone with 2" and more are reporting bearing failures along with other suspension wear in under 1000 miles. This is why I decided on the 1.5". Is it more stable?...slightly. Does it look better?...definitely. Did they adversely effect steering and handling? Other increase bump-steer slightly, no, nothing noticeable. Will I keep using them?..F'n-A :)

OK, I've dumped my brain on you enough. Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I will try to measure the hubs on my IRS X8 too. Did outside of tires, which for me is what makes sense. Even if that is the wrong way of doing it, it's what gives the look and the total width - as in if you pass through a narrow gate or what ever.

1" spacers were out of stock, so will try to make some my self.

Plenty on ebay. Here's but one:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/162751410307?hash=item25e4bd7083:g:iH8AAOSw3h1ZS127
On width I was thinking it may have the wrong offset rims on..well..one end or the other. But maybe CFM did set the older X8s up that way for stability..or something.

Did a little bit och mock up and found 1" in front being a little wide for my taste, to match I need 2" rear which also is a little bit much as the tires sticks outside the fenders = un practical.

So I think I will leave stock front setup which is pretty much in line with the fenders and add 30mm on each side rear to make it slightly wider rear then front.  I bought screws and nuts today and will manufacture the spacer friday.

Might change my mind with time....  we'll se :)
