Not on my Z8 but there have been some reports of defective batteries. If your voltage check shoes 14.2-14.6 volts on the battery while running, the charging system is OK and there's probably something with the battery. If not, take the battery to your local Auto Zone and have it load tested to be sure.

What symptom are you observing? There is a battery meter on the dash, what does it read at 5k rpm?

The service manual should outline how to test them both. One must be bad.

Make sure you have the extra green/black wires hooked up, that come from rectifier, I have seen a couple 800 with them tucked back behind the battery,

You can test the mag, 3 yellow wire Coming out of side of engine, follow them to the plug, you can unplug and set multi to AC then put 1 probe to ground the other in any hole, start engine check all three, should be around 70v and all should be very close to the same output. If that is ok, then you can check rectifier, but if nothing on dash and all wires hooked up I'd say you need a rectifier

I think probing both leads from the meter into any (and all) the 3 yellow stator wires would be a good way to test the stator.
