Sounds like clutch noise. CVTs can be noisy. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it starts to sound different.

Same here but got way worse.... Hello, all I have a 2012 X800 and ever since I bought this ATV (3 Years Now) It has had a small "knocking" Noise near my right break foot. The noise has gotten louder in the past 6 months and I was going 60 MPG the other day and the ATV just Stopped!  The rear tires locked up getting me almost out of control. After I caught my breath, I tried to restart and it would bearly turn over, started and then rapid stop.

Is this a Destroyed clutch? I have removed the inspection "large cover" and the belt is in great shape but is engaged on the right site "clutch side" when turning right (Motor rotation) I tried to remove the large nut on the right clutch side and it is stripped. Any thoughts what I should do from here. Please and Thank you

Sounds bad..but need to narrow it down so yes, first remove the clutches. All 800s use a 32mm nut on the primary and a 36mm on the secondary. Use whatever you need to hold the clutch and remove that stripped nut. Both are right hand threaded..at least it is on the Zs. After they are off, see ho it rolls...and if easley, see how the engine turns over. If still hard, then see if the primary clutch shaft spins easley one way but stops the other. The one way bearing will cause it to do this. If it does, the problem is deeper. See if it still is hard to rotate. If it is, IMO-she's gone. Will need a full rebuild.

Well, expand the secondary and pull it's nut. You may be able to get the belt off that way. Going to need to get that primary off then I guess replace that shaft and nut. 80ftlbs torque. I go to 85 but no more.

Right hand thread. Yes lefty loosly. Counterclockwise is off. If I understand correctly the primary is stuck closed and the belt is at the top of the pulleys? Are you sure the nut is stripped? Does the back pulley turn with the nut? The back pulley and the black thrust plate have the splines and the front pulley is smooth inside. If the nut backed off, the plate will slip off the splines and might cause it to jam up. I should have some pictures of it apart on here somewhere.

I know its not relevant to what is going on here but, I watched the video that Maniac posted and my Z800 makes that same exact sound.  It happens when the transmission goes from drive to coast.  I never realized it until I watched and listened to the video.  Cheers.

Thanks  Cosmosdan, I got the nut off and the shaft was stropped. the nut would turn but the shaft not. I got it off last night along with the two pullies, I am working on getting the case of tonight so I can get to the clutch. I will send pictures when I get in there.

OK, I need help now. Is the clutch behind this case? also, is it normal for the right shaft to only turn left and not right?
Also, this might sound dumb but if the clutch is behind the case, and the case is bolted to the frame, how do I remove this case???

:)  Yes...and Yes. That shaft is on a one-way bearing. One way it spins free...the other it locks to the crankshaft. Take a long look at the diagram on how it's put together.

Also, that is just a cover on the main case. It should unbolt but remember to drain your oil first...otherwise it will get messy.

Can I ask...why you are opening up the wet clutch?

Thank you  NMKawierider, The motor sometimes turns over than other times it will not. Is this a clutch problem before I remove the case?

If you can rotate that shaft one way without any weird feeling or noise, then I would say here is nothing wrong with the wet clutch or oneway bearing...and no reason to open it up. Also, I think once you do you will need a gasket...maybe. Check the manual on that one.
