LEMON OF LEMONS
« on: July 11, 2018, 10:08:50 AM »
I'm writing this in the hopes that "someone, anyone" from CFMoto reads this.
In spring of 2016 my wife and I bought a (2016) brand new CFMoto CForce 800 EPS.
So far - it has 114.5 miles out of it, including the 42 demo miles
that were on it -- So, in two years we have been able to tease out 72.5 miles without it breaking down (two years). This has be a "very" expensive lemon of lemons.
I am 65 years old and have no reason to not tell it like it is. My wife and I saved up for a new wheeler for years that could fit our needs. (Cabin off the grid, looooooong walk, needs work and supplies)

So, I'll give you the dirty.

Would not go into low (and sometimes pop out - exciting when it does that going uphill). Have to slam it into low and tease the throttle - back to shop twice for this.
When it does this it grinds horrible! Probably a lot of shards in the tranny by now.
Still does it and we "need" low gear.
Is still not fixed. The shop says it's an " idiosyncrasy " of the wheeler....are you kidding?
They state they have tried but cannot fix it.

Pops out of park - same problem as low gear - Apparently not fixable either? The wheeler could be sitting, off, if on a hill in park, the wheels to the upside, and then decide to go walkabout on its own. Very exciting. I carry wheel chocks with me now "always".
By the way - most times have to tease it into what I call "partial park" mode by violently rocking it front to back.

Going down hill and making a turn it sounds as if the CV joints are going to explode.
Very loud clicking and popping. Shop says they are fine. This does not always happen, just once in awhile.

Front brakes squishy and will not stop the machine. Shop says they bled them and it's a problem with this CFMoto model - can't fix.

Dashboard fogs up overnight if there is rain but disappears when in the sun hits.
Another shop "oh well" moment.

The rear hitch was not tightened down and "U ed" out pulling a cart. The shop said they would order and new one!
Nice.
Ordered the wrong part twice. I give up.

Winch was not tightened up on one side. Used it a few times and the cable was winding up only on one side. Broke the plenum of the winch, and ruined the cable, shop ignored it.....a "oh well" situation. Fixed it myself, and put a kevlar rope on. Plenum will have to live broken.......

Lots of grease coming out of the axle boots. If grease comes out, eventually water will go in. (probably major overfill, but that ruins a boot)

By the way - this machine was still under warranty. I know you're going to say take it somewhere else - there is no somewhere else except a days journey from where I am that handles CFMoto. My Bad.

Now for the latest!
Of course no more warranty and hasn't been for awhile..........

As of last week the machine is sitting on the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. 114.5 miles on it!
The cooling fan will not come on and it will overheat in a New York minute.
Tried to run then let cool, gain a little distance but lost the light - LOOOOONG WALK TO AND FRO. Tried several times.
Bought this thing to cancel out the to and fro - not working.
Called the shop and they said probably a switch, follow the wires and cross them and it should activate the fan - well, next time I care to walk to the middle of nowhere I will try it. Bringing a sledge hammer with me. Can't get to the wires without allot of take this and that off.

Remember --- 72.5 miles on this thing in two years.
Shop is 1.5 hours away. Many trips.
We walk to our cabin now and have to carry everything as it needs allot of work- I'm too old for this.

I hope you all have a much better experience than we have had so far.
It's not Cabin Bob anymore, it's Tired Bob.
I'm so old I remember when the Dead Sea was just sick.

CFMoto -- Replace this machine! Stand behind your product!
Shop has all the info saved!

Welcome. Man..sounds like that needs to be someone else's problem. Normally the 800s don't have issues like that and it's clear your dealership has no clue..or connection to it's product. I strongly suggest you contact CF Moto USA directly and I would even cut-n-paste this complete accounting in a message to them. I say this because they probably won't see it here. Here is the link to their customer care contact page:

An other dealer would do the trick to...........

CF Moto's are sensibel in the gears. The L and P are at the end of the stick....needs an adjustment, or.........
Change the way you shift. You habe a fixes rear axle. If it is under strain it wil be difficult to switch gears. I do it always like this: Gear in H; no brakes; give a little gas so that the machine moves 1 inch; go off the gas and at the same time move the stick into N, L, R or P. Only wenn the RPM's are down to idle, the gear is in. Now you can move the machine again.
If the machine is resting and you want to drive it for the first time: pull the brake and start it. Then let go of the brakes and put it into gear. DONT force it into gear !! What is the common mistake: You force the stick in its place but the gear is not in. Then you go on the gas and is wil start grinding. Try it and you wil be surprised.

CFM not cooling/fan out of order. A common problem. Replace the temperature sensor on the fan with a decent one off a car. The don't break down.

CV joints: wenn they are broke/damaged the wil always make sound. Not on and off. I think you hear the rollers of you primaire on the Vario. Open the vario and clean everything. Every part needs to be clean. Very light grease the rollers and put everything together again.
The shout never be grease outside of a CV joint. If there is, there is a leak and has to be repaired. Even the dummest workshop can do that..(hopefully)
Good luck.
Gr. Cees.

CFM U800 with 4406 km.

Sounds like there maybe a story to 42 miles you did not put on. Extreme low miles means nothing if it was involved in a wreck, abused or who knows what.

The shift linkage of the CF800 is better than any of the other models, I only wish the ZF & UF shifted as precisely. It should work near perfect.

The brake system makes my head shake in disbelief.....it's way to complicated...it does work & I will explain. The manufacturer choose not to use a proportioning valve, so when you squeeze the hand brake lever you only get approx. 50% force. To get full brake power you need to step on the foot pedal. It's dumb but I suspect you don't know what I've explained....most likely because your dealer does not know.

The brake system will bleed, it's difficult & again beyond the average dealer. I don't think you have a bleed problem......the CF800 have been very good.

I think I read in your war stories you are seeing grease leaking form the CV joints? Look closely & see if the clamps on the leakers are the same as the good ones. If different go back to my first comment.

Fan switch/sensor is common so don't read anything into that. Every manufacturer I know of has been caught with faulty sensor.......I cannot think of any the new updated failures.....there is a photo how to identify the two.

One of my kids told his buddy that his mother was older than dirt  ;D it was done innocently & hilarious @ that time  :)
ZF 800 LX Trail, stock for now.......not for long.

I recognize the low gear problem from my dads 800 the fix was simple took of the side panel and adjusted the gear selector rod i bit and the problem never have come back. and as people said erlier there is a nev sensor that activates the fan tho old ones are unfortunally a common problem

Captain Bob, I feel for you.

Back in the winter of 2013, our 2001 Kodiak 400 was stolen and never found.  It was a super reliable bike, 10,000 km on it and the only thing we had to do other than routine maintenance was a cdi at around 6500 km.  We had a rear seat on it and my wife and I took it all over the place, pretty much every weekend.
We went to the local Yamaha dealer, looking at a Grizzly 700, similar to her dad's.  The salesman saw that the 2 of us are "fluffy" folks, and suggested a 2-up bike.  They had a shiny new Silver Terralander 800 in the showroom with the Grizzlies, Kodiaks, Brute Force, etc.  It was the only 2 up bike they had.
The salesman praised the bike up to the highest, saying it has Grizzly differentials and powertrains, a super powerful 800 V-Twin, and loads of room.  We sat on it and really liked the room, took it for a tour out back of their store, and loved the ride, the space, the power.
A few days later, I took it home.  We went for a 20-30 km run, and it was so fun.  My only gripe at the time was it had a turning circle of a Kenworth, but I could get past that.
Then the piece of crap's true colors started to show within a month or so.

The brakes were absolutely terrible, and it wouldn't go fully into park a lot.  Took it back, they said they fixed it.
They didn't.  The brakes remained horrible.  I adjusted the hand brake cables as far as they could be adjusted, and it would just gradually slow down.  A couple more trips for that and the park issue, and the issue was semi-resolved.
6 months later, the winch quit while I was plowing after a snow storm.  Upon further inspection, the winch actually split in 2, and managed to bend the bottom of the radiator a little.  I contacted my dealer, only 3 month warranty on accessories.  Great.  Plus, since the accessory failed, the warranty wouldn't cover the radiator.  Thankfully it wasn't leaking.
I actually had about 8 months of trouble free driving, and thought it was just a couple glitches.

Then all hell broke loose.  My wife and I were heading to our favorite fishing hole, and I thought the engine seemed louder.  I looked at the gauges, and the temp was pegged in the red.  The fan was going but not doing much.  We pulled over, had a picnic and let the bike cool down.  I checked the coolant, and it was fine,  then continued to our fishing hole with no more overheating.  On the drive back home, it overheated again.

Back to the dealer.  It took them 6-7 months to get all the parts off backorder needed to fix the bike.  Water pump, gasket, and end gasket on the engine.  I got the bike back in late March.  With no rear brakes.  Sitting at the dealer waiting for parts, SITTING OUTSIDE, the rear master cylinder seized solid.  And they said it wasn't covered under warranty. I decided to take a little run to our camp the next day, and the engine went.  It was knocking REALLY bad and had no power.  My father in law towed me back home, and I had to push it onto the trailer to take it back to the dealer once again.
It sat at the dealer for nearly a month before they decided to look at it, and the only reason they did was that I started pestering them about 2 weeks in.  Then they were lollygagging and making excuses, so I called CF Moto Canada.  They actually revoked my dealer's license for selling CF Moto, and they suggested I take it to another dealer.  My old dealer was 15 min away, the only other one in NS is 3 hours away.
So off to the new dealer to get the bike fixed.  It took about a month, but I got it back running pretty good. Covered under warranty.
That lasted about a week.  It started running on one cylinder, and backfiring bad.  Then it quit completely about 5 km from home.  The exhaust got so hot it melted one taillight and wiring going to the trunk.  Once again, it got dragged home on a rope.  Once again, back to the new dealer.  They "Cleaned" the oxygen sensor and changed the plugs and one coil.
It was working good for 4 or 5 months after that, then started overheating again.  The coolant was empty.  I topped the coolant up a few times, then took it to them.  They fixed it, stating the radiator was clogged with mud, and I'd have to foot the bill.  I never drove through mud, but anyhow...
So the past 3 months have been the best its ever worked.  Which isn't saying much.  It's a 2013 with just 3000 km on it.

Ever try trading one of these crap heaps in?  NOBODY will take one on trade.  I even tried selling it for a loss on Kijiji, and no takers.

I nicknamed the bike HERPES, because it seems you're stuck with it forever, and nobody wants to touch them.
