Engine brake problem..
« on: April 30, 2023, 01:35:17 AM »
Hello,

I'm Marc from Hungary... I have a 2013 Terralander 800. The quad ran 2800 km.. My problem is that when I let off the gas, a strange metallic sound can be heard from around the variator...  :( This sound is only experienced in forward gear (H or L gear). In reverse, it doesn't make that abnormal noise when enginebraking...
If I put the transmission in neutral and rev up the engine, the metallic sound can't be heard either! So it only makes this metallic sound in forward when I use the engine brake.

I've tried researching on the internet. I have read in several places that the freewheel bearing is responsible for the engine brake on this type. I ordered a new freewheel bearing the other day and replaced it! But unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. (I made sure to insert the freewheel bearing in the correct direction.. The variator cannot be turned clockwise by hand. And it can be rotated freely to the left, i.e. backwards.)

What can cause this metallic sound when enginebraking?

I will make a video about the phenomenon in the afternoon!

Thank you very much in advance for the helpful comments!

By due process of elimination we will find it. First, I assume while in there replacing the one-way bearing you also inspected the wet clutch, it's springs and shoes. Also inspected the bearings on the clutch shaft both inner and the one in the CVT cover and all is well and correct. Also sense the primary was off you serviced and cleaned it completely and inspected the splines on the cam plate and the end of the clutch shaft for wear or signs of stripping. Correct? With all this passing inspection there is nothing from the primary inward that can cause this noise. And there is nothing on the secondary that can do it as well unless it is stripped on the splines but that has never happened before. This leaves the transmission and one of the oldest problems CFM has had. And that is non-proper gear positioning due to improper shifter linkage adjustment or....a damaged shifter fork as in bent. This happens when shifting while either under load or just in motion. The noise in this case would be like gears grinding and only when force is applied while decelerating. The feeling would be as if the engine breaking was slipping. Check the linkage adjustment first in neutral-make sure it is centered in the gate. Also check the motor mounting bolts as loose bolts will let the engine rock and change the alignment. If it still does it remove the linkage and move it on the transmission by hand and try it. If it still does it and it does feel like slipping gears, then it's likely there is a problem in the shifter parts in the transmission as well as now the dogs are rounded-off on the gears that it moved. If so, yes that means a full engine tear-down and rebuild to fix...as far as I know.

Hello NMKawierider, I made a video today! I raised the back of the quad... and I put it in H gear. The metallic sound can be heard on the video... So that the rear wheels were in the air at a certain speed, even without the engine brake, the metallic sound came out. But if I go with the quad, this sound only occurs when the engine brake is applied.

With the cover removed i have to say the sound is coming from behind the rear pulley... Behind the rear pulley is the gear housing, right?

Did this model have a type error with the gearbox?

Thank you very much, thank you!

That's more of a failing bearing on one of the shafts sound or some contact noise...not transmission. Pull the secondary and the primary and see if either shaft has and kind of movement and...check the deflector plate behind the primary..it may be loose and touching the primary.
