Diff lock won’t engage
« on: March 19, 2019, 02:03:55 PM »
Any idea where to start troubleshooting diff lock that won’t engage. 4wd works fine aka one whee won’t spin if it has no traction so kind of a 3wd. Diff lock acts the exact same as normal 4wd. I can hear the actuator when I press diff lock. The indicator blinks then goes solid X, but diff lock is most definetly not truly engaged. Should I just attempt warranty or is this a common issue with some easy fixes and items to check?

Probably a bad actuator or broken slide gear. I would try the warranty first.

Thanks. Yea I think that’s my plan. I read some posts about taking the wire plugs off and cleaning the contacts etc but that to me don’t make sense as I can hear it “working”.

So are there multiple levels of actuation in the actuator. 4wd still works. Makes me hopeful it’s not a major issue...

Yeah as I remember step one it moves a fork which moves a coupling to lock in 4wd, then the second step is that it moves the same coupler a little farther to connect the two axles. Some forks get bent and some break the drive gear slide..thing..ie   lol  Usually an easy fix. Just have to pull the actuator off to get to the stuff. Not tough.

Cool bud thanks for the info. I’ll do it myself if the dealer gives me shit. I have larger than stock tires so I’m expecting to hear about that although I can’t see how that would affect the diff setup. I’ll post a follow up once I get dealer feedback.

UPDATE

Managed to get it into the dealer. Shift fork in diff was bent. Covered under warranty. Went to to pick it up today it took five days to order part and install which isn’t bad at all.

Took it for a ride at the dealer track and now when I put it in regular 4wd diff lock locks in without me pressing diff lock button. They think the actuator motor may be screwed up too. They have one on hand and it will be ready Monday.

Update

Picked up from dealer with new diff actuator unit and every is working perfectly. Wondering if this was what caused the bent shift fork to start with maybe as I can’t recall a time riding when I said damn I broke something lol.

There's some things to remember when shifting it in and out of 4wd and diff-loc. Things like..never be under power or decelerating when shifting anything in or out...and don't be going too fast or turning in either direction either. The coupler(s) can partly engage the splines then get too much load and be forced apart. That...bends forks...and damages actuators.
