Bleeding the brakes
« on: January 21, 2021, 12:31:01 PM »
X8 800 2013, so I’ve changed both master cylinders, also new pads, but when trying to bleed them off I can’t seem to find any pressure, unless I hold down the foot pedal and pump the brake lever. Same as if I hold the brake lever and pump the rear brake. Any idea’s how I could complete these brakes would be very much appreciated. Thank you

All I know is this type of system, the ones with two masters that feed pressure to the same slave or calipers have either two lines, two chambers within the caliper...and two bleed ports, one for each chamber, which I believe yours has as in the first pic.. or as in the second pic, a proportional valving system...which is on the newer machines. I also know conventional bleeding is very difficult to do on these and really must be done either by back-bleeding or power bleeding from either direction. Air...likes to rise up, and with only 3-4 pumps between re-fillings on the master, it's almost impossible to move air all the way down and out the bleed port before you have to stop and refill it..and while refilling that air bubble isn't just sitting there waiting on you..it's traveling back up the line.

How would you suggest I get it done? Take it to a local quad bike repair shop? Seems so complicated and hard work

Well, it were mine...I would do the foot brake first as it is the lowest. Do the rear first.then the front left then front right. I can't tell you which is the correct bleeder for the foot brake but guessing it's likely the lowers of the two. Then with help, and as I understand it, the lever brake only applies pressure to the fronts, with some help to be faster I would try the fronts conventional. If that doesn't work I would use my vacuum bleeder with someone keeping the res full. I found this a good tool to have in the shop and cheap enough not to feel bad when it sits long periods without use. Of course this could be used on the backs anyway...and might make the process easier all around.
