Looking for some opinions on where to start on this issue.

I had the bike out in some very wet conditions, nothing where I swamped it or anything but just a lot of puddles and raining at the same time as well.

It ran fine until my return back home, where it started to cut out and eventually quit running.  When I tried to start it again it just cranked and cranked.  Eventually is would idle but as soon as you touched the throttle it died.  I had a friend tow me out and home, and the next day after it dried out it started up again no problem but only for about 5-10 minutes then did the same started to miss and die.  Then I was able to re-start it but only could get it to idle.  It also starts quire hard needs 10-15 seconds of cranking to start after this starts.

I checked the voltage that is fine, there is plenty of fuel in the tank and when it runs it runs normally for the short time that is does.

There's a list of things I can check such as the fuel pump, O2 sensor, ignition.  Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and thoughts on where to start?

When it starts doing this, remove the gas cap and reinstall. If the problem goes away for..10 minutes or so, fix or replace the tank vent check valve...or cap..however it's supposed to replace the fuel it uses with air.

So had some time this weekend to look into further.  It's not the gas cap as that had no effect on it not starting.

Now, giving it a week to dry out ran perfectly for 45 minutes just in my yard driving around.

So I tried spraying water on it and eventually got the issue to repeat.  Not sure yet on what the issue is but definitely related to something shorting.

I have a question that may explain the problem, the stator has 2 leads coming from it, a larger 3 pin plug which is the charging circuit and another 2 wire lead that I still need to trace?  Does anyone know what this is for, I assume a sensor.

Also I found a broken insulation on the stator lead wires and the plug has has melted partially internally, which is another issue but despite this it is charging the battery.
