Weekend issues
« on: November 13, 2017, 09:28:55 AM »
Hello all, hope everyone is well. So I went to the mudaholick's convention in Jacksonville Texas over the weekend.  Had a couple issues come up.  The first issue happened about 20 minutes into my first ride Friday night, when the power steering quit working.  It's giving a code 32 I checked all the wiring and brackets everything looks OK.  The other issue happened about two hours into my ride on Saturday, when the radiator fan quit working.  Again can't find any issues with the wiring or connections but the fan just barely turns.  So I'm a little disappointed because I got about five hours of  trail time all weekend. And only put about 15 miles on.  Has anyone else experienced these problems and found a resolution?

Not sure on the CF's but if they are running the same thermoswitch as the Z's then it may be the issue. Many have installed an override switch in case this fails.
If you jumper the fan will it come on?
As far as the PS no clue, start small check fuses, connections etc.

So just an update. I didn't have time to look at it myself to I dropped it off at my local dealer. (Twisted V, in whitehouse TX) After a week and not hearing from them I called to check the status. They say the EPS motor is bad and the thermal switch too. I had my suspicions it was the switch but while on the trail the fan was just barely turning. Which gave me doubts. Anyway, it's supposedly fixed. So I ask about the current cost of what they had done. (They hadn't ordered the EPS motor yet)  And estimate to get it all fixed.  Here we are another 3 business days down the road and I'm calling them back again. ( by the way in all of my dealings they have never called me back when they said they would) And they still don't have a cost for the work that has already been done or an estimate to get it all fixed. So here I am waiting on a call back again.  >:( thanks for letting me vent. I'll post up the outcome when it's over.

That’s BS, I’d call corporate and key them in on what’s going on with your dealer.  They may help you out.

I was really hoping to get on here and write up a story about how everything worked out great and give praise to twisted v for a job well done. Unfortunately that's not what happened. So they did finally call back with a cost of just under $150 and an estimate for the full repair of $400. I told them to go ahead and do it all. The good news is they ordered the EPS motor and was able to get it covered under warranty. But that's where the good news ends.  So they called me on Tuesday 12th and tell me it's ready. I go pick it up Wednesday 13th evening cost just under $150. I get home ride it around and so far the EPS is working good but what do you know it's still overheating. I check to see and the fan is barely turning. The hotter it gets the slower it turns. Additionally there are now new electrical problems.  When the unit is running my low beam headlights stay on all the time regardless of the switch position and the fog lights do not work at all and the low beams go off when the highs are turned on. With the unit not running the low beams are on while the fuel pump is priming as soon as the fuel pump stops the low beams go off and the fog lights come on. I immediately call and explain everything that's happening to their service tech. He apologized and asked me to bring it back in as soon as I could.  The following day Thursday 15th  I called them when I got home which was an hour before they closed. I ask if they were going to be there if so I would bring the unit in. I was told someone would indeed be there. It's a 40 minute drive one way with traffic, I still had to load the unit up and stop for gas along the way (or I wouldn't have made it at all). There was a line at the gas station (damn holiday traffic). All of this meant that I was pulling in their driveway two minutes after closing time. At the exact time I am pulling in their driveway I am watching the employee (Lacey Dryman) I spoke to on the phone pull out of their driveway. Needless to say I am extremely pissed off! I wouldn't be mad if I hadn't called before to let her know I was coming. This is completely unacceptable customer service. To anyone who lives in East Texas absolutely DO NOT use Twisted V in Whitehouse unless you enjoy being jerked around. The employee Lacey Dryman has terrible customer relations. PS I run a mobile service business, I am very familiar with customer service. So at this point I'm not sure what to do I damn sure don't want to take it back to them. So here I am with a screwed up machine that is still overheating due to bad diagnostics and repair. And who the hell knows what's going on with this other screwy electrical. Maybe I should do the work myself and document everything in case I find that the service tech screwed something up. But what then? How could they possibly make this right? Should I try and contact the owner or go straight to CFmoto?

That absolutely sucks. That's no way to treat a client- especially one that called ahead and said he was going to be there just after closing time and was assured someone would be there. I would find out why you were told that and talk to the owner...then I would talk to CFM about this dealer...and your issues...which sounds like a bad ground as all indications are there is feedback through other systems. These are simple systems with many systems using a common ground so if it were me, I would get the wiring diagram and have a look. Bet it's something simple....and bad plug, grounding bolt loose..(which cfm is famous for)..ect.

I would certainly talk to the owner and give the service dept a chance to make it right, especially if it is still under warranty.

And they should offer some sort of benefit for the hassle had as a result of their employee.

A letter to CFMOTO copying the business when this is all settles would certainly be reasonable as well.

The daytime running lights are tied to the fuel pump circuit, If you want to remove them there is a small diode near the steering stem left side staring at the bike on the main cable harness, pulling the diode will kill the running light and the lights will fully turn off in the off position. The diode is about 1cm across and 2cm long (black rectangle plugged into white plastic retainer).
For the problem with the thermoswitch, make sure it matches the photo I have attached, this should end your problems for now, There are still a lot of old style thermoswitches out the that are prone to premature failure.

Customer service , sorry I can't help you with that.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Thanks for all the input guys! I haven't had time to work on it or take it back to them yet. You all have some good suggestions and I think I will try and tackle this myself when I have some time. I did call the shop and talk to one of the owners about all my issues. However I'm still not comfortable taking it back to them. I seem to have the shittiest luck taking anything to a shop. About 12 years ago I had my motorcycle serviced at a local shop and on top of being over priced they left a lot of wiring and bolts loose. Including brake caliper bolts just hand started and swing arm bolts stripped. Since then I am the only one who works on my motorcycle (I don't want to die because of some shops ignorance) there are other instances of shops screwing stuff up on my cars. Currently my wife's car is back in the shop due to something there mechanic screwed up in the driveline. And all they were doing was replacing the pinion seal. Thanks again! I'll let y'all know what I find on the atv. Merry Christmas and happy new year to all!

It turns out I had a slow enough day I could put all my calls on my service tech.  So I had a chance to check out some things. On the lights, I removed the diode and they are back to working like normal but the running lights are still on with the switch in the off position. They did install the new style thermal switch. After warming it up and testing with the engine running I'm getting a good 14V to the fan motor but it is still barely turning. Alpha sports has two fan options. One is the Panasonic like it came with the other is a sumitomo waterproof. Any suggestions which one I should go with?

If you go in deep stuff, get the waterproof. Besides..the other one failed you..:)

My concern with the sumitomo is that it's untested as far as I know and $60 cheaper. I know more money doesn't always mean better quality. On the Panasonic I was thinking I would put a dot of silicone in the vent tube. And allow the vinyl tube to act as an expansion and contraction chamber. (I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not) The deepest water I've ever gone in was about 6 inches over the floorboard. However even in small puddles the splash factor creates steam, combine that with the high humidity we have down here and, the fact that I thoroughly clean it after every mudding means everything gets wet at some point. So I'm pretty convinced the moisture is what killed the fan motor. After saying all this I guess I'll be the guinea pig and jump on the "water proof" sumitomo. Thanks for helping me talk it out lol!

Reach in and turn that fan blade manually and see if there's resistance or it spins freely. If it's tight then you need to explore why. fan motor might be pooched.
