so i drove it for the first time yesterday and after about a mile or so i noticed the the temp bars rising and the fan not coming on till the red light of death came on so i stoped waited 5 mins and nothing happened so i drove it slowly to get home which was less than a quatermile then the fan turned on and it cooled down. so question was it sitting for all fall winter and not starting it might have made the battery not up to snuff and i need to do a battery tender for a bit because turning on the key was  an issue as well i needed to do that too just to get to start it prior to riding it too. and that wasn't a problem before it was parked?

Need to address one problem at a time. 1st, if you let it sit all winter without being charged or on a tender, you may be kissing that battery good by. But get a tender now and hook it up and let it sit until the green light comes on. Need a tender anyway..get get he cheap one. That may take two days. If after three days it hasn't fully charged... better consider a new battery as that one is too sulfated.

On the overheating, sounds like the coolant level in the radiator is low enough to expose the fan switch so..check it...not the recovery bottle, the radiator. While there look down inside and see if there is any sign of jelled coolant. This was a problem with their older coolants. This would also explain your cooling issue.
